tpstudios
hello, Im currently with godaddy as my host and everything is fine my shop is installed, added mods and designed it my way but godaddy is sooo slow alot of times and especially at the beginning of running the onlineshop I cant have a slow webhost and have customers waiting for couple of minutes till the site loads..well long story short I decided now to test out a new host (UK host) called streamline and they have a 3 month trial account so I uploaded everything n installed the SQL n everything but now I just found out that they dont support .htaccess on the host package and I would need to buy an extra addon for ?15 per month or something to have .htaccess. However im not willing to pay for that as I can get that for free with almost any other webhost so the problem is obviously now that my admin section is not protected and I couldnt find a contrib. which doesnt require .htaccess so Im askin you guys n girls if anybody knows how to properly protect my admin section without .htaccess? Also if anybody happens to have any experience with streamline.net I would appreciate comments about it aswell (are the servers reliable? fast?). thanks alot! Guest
Does your host have password protection? If so password protect your admin folder.
ozcsys
Short version is if you have decided you want to use osC then you need to find a hosting company that will let you run osC without jumping through a bunch of hoops. If you have to fight to get osC setup then you have the wrong hosting company. The Knowledge Base is a wonderful thing. Do you have a problem? Have you checked out Common Problems? There are many very useful osC Contributions Are you having trouble with a installed contribution? Have you checked out the support thread found Here BACKUP BACKUP BACKUP!!! You did backup, right?? butterflyfish
Agreed. Running the shop is enough work without having to deal with funky hosting. I found my host (StartLogic in the US) by Googling and just comparing all the different plans I ran across. Until I got sick of it. Just type in UK web host. You'll get a ton of results. tpstudios
Does your host have password protection? If so password protect your admin folder. yes but only for ?15 a month I believe and eventho I know its necessary for me to have a password protection I rather find a new host as I dont really feel like paying more money for an extra nice little feature then for the whole hosting itself. Short version is if you have decided you want to use osC then you need to find a hosting company that will let you run osC without jumping through a bunch of hoops. If you have to fight to get osC setup then you have the wrong hosting company. exactly thats why I want to move away from godaddy because they have ridicliously slow loading times. I got cubecart installed on there at the moment and now installed xtcommerce and oscommerce on another MYSQL database to test them but they are all still slow so I know its godaddys fault. Stupid of me in the first place to get a US host for european customers and especially a really cheap one as the saying "you get what you pay for" is really true in some cases lol. I must say xtcommerce has alot of nice features with it already where you have alot of options from the start rather then installing contribs. But oscommerce seems easier somehow and there alot of contribs so I have better chances finding the answers/mods I need. Thats makes work alot easier as busy all day with sales I dont have much time to focus on creating all the things I need so I rather go pick up one of the thousand contribs on here. Agreed. Thats how I came across streamline cause supposedly its the biggest or atleast one of the biggest UK hosting companies. But I guess I will switch to 1and1 cause I know they are reliable and have a good service but are more expensive then the rest. But I guess its necessary if you want to run a shop successfull without having to worry about downtimes or slow websites.
