Aud
Hi, I am considering using OsCommerce, but am currently feeling a bit daunted after reading some of the forum. I have used a lot of systems, but never set up any of my own! Would you recommend it to somone who has no computer design experience, who learns quick, but has only USED different accounting/travel/flight etc systems - a new ventrure for me! Also I am considering using paypal, any comments and also do you know if the OsCommerce trolley system is compatable? Thanks for any feedback, Aud

wequick
If you're a fast learner, I'm sure you can do it ... its not as hard as it seems .. Don't expect to get it done over night, but if you have time to spend, I'm sure you'll be happy with the end result. If you really get stuck, there's always someone here willing to help out, but it helps if you at least check the first couple of pages in the help section first to make sure the question hasn't been asked and answered 3 times already that day ! .. lol Good luck ! wequick
....also, depending on the host you have, they may have an osCommerce integration built in with your hosting package ... I'm with Netfirms and its part of the package and they also have lots of good help pages. I knew nothing and have only done about 7 hours of reading/work to get what I've gotten so far on mine .. (I have a long way to go still, but just to show you that a newbie can do it .. ) http://wequick.com/store/nfoscomm/catalog/

diana47
oh I forgot to mention...you might find this useful. I have found oscommerce on cpanel from my website hosting on linux. I think most of linux hosting got cpanel with fantastico and included oscommerce so installation was really easy. I do not know if windows based servers have freebies like that, as far as I know they do not. But as I said I am newbie to many areas. So if you do not have provider for your website needs I would advice to chose one who got fantastico and oscommerce already istalled. It will ease your work. I hope it helps a bit
Guest
Oscommerce is an amazing program...especially for one that is free! However, if you haven't worked with php, html, databases and such, then you must have patience and time to fiddle with things to customize your website to your liking. It's a bit like walking into a foregin country - at first you have no idea what anyone is saying, but then you pick up bits and pieces and pretty soon you'll feel comfortable with the language and what everyone is saying. Don't be afraid to try things out, but ever so important BACKUP before you do anything. The forum is a great place to find help. I browse through it almost everyday, not just to find the answers to my problems or things I'm stuck on, but also for new ideas. There is great information here, but like I said, the most important things you need when starting out with oscommerce are patience, time and a willingness to learn/research. Good luck!
