In my Administration/Configuration I am after advice on what I should set my 'Logging' and 'Sessions' to...

This is what they are set to now....do I need to change anything?

Unfortunately I don't really understand what their functions are for  So hence not sure if I should be changing anything.....

Admin/Configuration/Logging

Store Page Parse Time - false

Log Destination - /var/log/www/tep/page_parse_time.log

Log Date Format - %d/%m/%Y %H:%M:%S

Display The Page Parse Time - false

Store Database Queries - false

Admin/Configuration/Sessions

Session Directory - /tmp

Force Cookie Use - True

Check SSL Session ID - True

Check User Agent - True

Check IP Address - True

Prevent Spider Sessions - False

Recreate Session - True

Thanx in advance :)

Thanks Mervyn! I Appreciate your response :)

Now I am a little hesitant about changing my settings..... as there are a few that that are opposite to yours..... If either yourself or even someone else can help clarify their purpose that would really help me make a decision on whether I need to change them or not.....

Thanks again for taking the time to reply

Hi Mervyn! Sorry 'bout the delay in replying.....been a little busy.....

I have my admin up and running without any probs'. And I guess some would say "if it aint broken, then don't fix it" or something to that accord anyway! I would just like to get to know my admin section a little better and to understand its full functionality. I guess with your settings a little different to mine it makes me even more curious as to what I should have my setting set to :(

Even tho you may not think you have helped me, I have really appreciated the time you have given me on this...THANX!!

Anyone else out there think they can give me some further insight :(

Here's my opinion on what to use:

Session Directory - /tmp

Force Cookie Use - False

Check SSL Session ID - False

Check User Agent - False

Check IP Address - False

Prevent Spider Sessions - True

Recreate Session - False

Here's the reasons / descriptions as I understand them:

Force Cookie Use

Lots of stores force users to use cookies instead of assigning session id's (SID - that long string of characters you get in the URL when browsing your store without cookies) but I've found that lots of customers checkout on my store without cookies enabled in their browsers. I forced cookies for a while when I had a few problems with my store and got several emails from customers saying that they didn't know how to change their cookie settings (even though the cookies_usage.php page gives instructions) and I would have to email them and explain further. Now, my customers are mainly older and I'm just guessing a little less familiar with computers/Internet/browsers. This one is really up to you though.

If you decide not to force cookies, the only thing you need to make sure that you do is visit all the pages in your store in a browser with cookies disabled with something added to your shopping cart. If you click on a page and the shopping cart is all of a sudden empty, then you have a link somewhere that isn't using the tep href.

Check IP Address

I believe this just keeps the session with one IP address. Users on AOL will have a different IP address for every page that they visit so leave false otherwise they won't be able to checkout.

Recreate Session

Definitely leave to false if you're on a shared server because if someone else is running OSC on the same server then you can see their products in your store when you visit it for a second or third or fourth, etc. time. Also if a customer from a certain IP address adds a product to their cart and another visitor comes to your store from that IP, then they will have the product in their cart too and also be able to possibly log in the first customers account.

Prevent Spider Sessions

This keeps spiders from Google and Yahoo for example from getting the SID. If they do index any of these pages with the SID, then you can have many problems. After a while they will drop your store from their index because they will see it as duplicate content. If they visit 10 times and get 10 different SIDs on the same page then they may think you actually have 10 different pages with the same content...not good.

Secondly, everyone that clicks on that page will have the same SID I believe which goes back to the Recreate sessions problem.

Hope that helped some and keep in mind that I'm an amateur (very amateur) at this so don't etch that in stone...

Let me add this too. If you prevent spider sessions use this contribution by SteveL.

http://www.oscommerce.com/community/contri...rch,spiders.txt

All you have to do is copy it over the spiders.txt already in your store. He updates this frequently with the latest known bots.

Also, if you've been online for a little bit and have been visited by a search engine, do a search for your site "www.whatever.com" in google or yahoo and see if the session id is attached to the page they have indexed. If it's there, then it will be a while before it changes after you prevent spider sessions.

Good luck

nihanshe, that looks right. When you download the contribution, you can just copy the spiders.txt file over the one in your store to make it easier.

bellabree - glad that helped some. I'm a newbie and that's just the way I understand it so some of that may be wrong.
