How big is your site?

I know it's a bit like asking how long is a piece of string, but...

I've just had my database crack it (my oscommerce store is still a work in progress) and while trying to come up with the reason why, I found out that my whole site takes up 167mb (I have 160mb alotted disk space, oops!). Now this isn't just my oscommerce site, I have another store (made from different software) on the same domain - it takes up about 30mb (including pics). My Oscommerce store has about 30 or so contribs, but not many products in the database, nor photos uploaded.

So I'm wondering if it's reasonable that my oscommerce store takes up about 110mb of space? In which case I'm going to have to look at a different host... How much disk space is your site taking up? And for those that have had a store running for a while now - how much disk space does your host give you? (i.e. is 160mb too little?)

I really don't understand much about the size of all the different files, which is why there are so many questions...

Thanks, ~Barbara~

The size of a basic oscommerce shop, as it comes, is under 5 MB. 110 MB is fairly large for an oscommerce shop, although I've seen larger. A common reason for this is that the images are uploaded at their original size. I know of one site that gets images from a supplier and each image is over 1 MB. So instead of editing them, the shop owner just uploads them. Image size will vary with the image but, in general, should not be over 100 KB You also have to consider if you have email accounts. Each one typically starts at 10 MB of disk space, and that is without any emails. And many times a site becomes loaded with old files that should be deleted. They can take up a lot of room over time. As for how much disk space a store gives you, that is determined by the plan you purchase. Some hosts will offer some very high amount of disk space, even unlimited, but those are not real and are just meant to entice. If you ever tried to use over a cetani amount, they would tell you that your site is violating some other limit and needs to be updated.

The bottom line is that if you are out of disk space, you need to remove some of your files or emails, or upgrade your hosting plan.
