Merlin180 Posted May 4, 2006 Posted May 4, 2006 Hi, I'm new to osCommerce and have a couple of initial questions: During installation (using Fantasico) I was asked for an SSL certificate. Is this to protect the admin area or for payment gateway processing??. I answered NO but it leads into my next question..... I'm looking at using the PayPal IPN gateway because it seems a bunch easier to get started. I know for some of the other gateways I need to buy an SSL certificate (and therefore also a fixed IP address) but I'm not sure if this is necessary when using PayPal - can anyone clarify this for me?? TIA

TIA You do not have to have a ssl cert if you are processing payments offsite ( such as paypal and 2ckout) but it may look better to your customers. For more info on ssl you may want to take a look at the thread found HERE The Knowledge Base is a wonderful thing. Do you have a problem? Have you checked out Common Problems? There are many very useful osC Contributions Are you having trouble with a installed contribution? Have you checked out the support thread found Here BACKUP BACKUP BACKUP!!! You did backup, right??

TIA Hi Merlin I am also relatively new to OSC and had exactly the same question... I came to the conclusion that we needed as SSL eventhough we were using PAYPAL for all our payments. The main reason is that although you are not collecting any credit card info you are asking your customers for personal info such as name, address etc and it is that info that needs to be secure. It also gives your customers peace of mind when they are buying from you that you respect their privacy and will protect that info as best you can. Most people who buy on the internet know about secure sites and the padlock symbol and if you site does not have this and there is an alternative site that sells the same thing but does offer this security - which one would you choose to shop with?? I know which one I would shop with!! Hope this might make things a bit clearer. :) :)
