Before you do any changes on your site you need to do BACKUP! BACKUP!

If you are running your website locally you do not need an ftp program.

I am not sure what you mean by link it to your website. You want to link osCommerce running locally on your machine to a website that is online?

Link it how? A link on the other site that points to your local machine?

Well, that is far more than I can help you with. You will need to have your computer on all the time, and set it up so other computers can actually see the website, figure out your IP and so on.

I am sure there is someone here that would know what to do. Maybe now that people can understand what you want to do someone with more knowledge will be able to respond.

Hi Robbie,

What you would need to do is first find out your IP (www.whatismyip.com - if you are unsure). You will also need to open up the port 3306 on your firewall or router.

Once done you will need to set up your oscommerce software and edit the configuration files (/catalog/includes/configure.php and /catalog/admin/includes/configure.php).

If your IP is dynamic I would recommend using something like www.no-ip.com so that you dont need to constantly keep updating the config files with your IP address.

You would still need to upload the oscommerce files to your webserver via ftp (cuteftp, flashfxp etc). The only thing that would run off your machine would be the Database.

Once the configuration is complete it should be fairly straight forward. Let me know if this is what you are looking for ....

P.S:- As Wendy James mentioned earlier you will need to have your computer on for the database to work..

P.P.S:- localhost (127.0.0.1) = lets the database know that it has to connect to the same machine the website is hosted on. It is the "LOCAL HOST", i.e. doesnt go out on to Internet ;)

what programme would i open the config files in?

Umm... notepad? ;)

You could download a PHP editor and use that, or if in doubt use dreamweaver... whatever takes your fancy I guess.....

With your limited knowledge, I really don't think you should be thinking about a home server of any kind.

but need to lol i dont want to pay someone to set it up and run it.

Seriously dont do it...

You really havent got the skills or knowledge to be running your own webserver in this way. besides having your PC on you need a webserver this could be run off your machine, but I really really wouldnt, especially if you are hoping to take any payment of any kind.

I would look around the internet and get the cheapest hosting you can ther are plenty of deals out there, you could even look no the leading auctions sites.

I kid you not Im an IT professional and would not consider hosting my own webserver, never mind hosting off my bog standard PC.

Sorry but I have to agree with cymonguk; if you dont know how to open simple configure files, you are jumping in at the deep end trying to set up a server at home...

Also working for an ISP and dealing with webservers daily, I would recommend going with a provider whom will manage this sort of thing for you, as if you are having problems with the setup at the beginning, then it will be a nightmare for you in the future when you come across obstacles.

If you are still wanting to set up on your computer at home, I would recommend first studying a little about networks, protocols and also php - there are many guides on the Internet that will be able to help...

Good luck!

As a little thought for you, although you may save a few pounds/dollars by not using a host, how much do you want to lose due to:

Being sued due to loss of customer data, under various laws

Someone gaining access to your OSC data, customer info, card details

Loss of revenue due to usae of something that is not suitable, and customers being able to tell

hmm true i might read up on it. the only reason for the host was due to the server im using to host my website i need permission from the owner as hes using it as well for his buiness. might have a chat with him about it
