security on admin folder

As mentioned in my earlier post, I changed my admin folder to something new... how do I password protect it? It never had protection, not even prior to the renaming of it.... I tried by going to my control panel and password protect directories, I created a user, added a password and saved it.. but now If I try to enter my oscommerce admin folder (with the new name) it tells me I do not have authorisation etc... I was hoping a window would pop up asking for the password or something.. it has protected it yes, but I don't know myself how to get it!!!
