Guest Posted May 1, 2006 Posted May 1, 2006 Hi, I'm new here and new to OsCommerce. I am needing to open an on-line shop/store for my site but am not quite sure on how to do it. I have checked around the site but got more lost then anything. Could someone please hold my hand and walk me through this for I'm stupid (well that's prob. what your thinking anyways). Do I have to pay to have an on-line shop? I have seen the OsCommerce stores used for many great sites and it works well.
Wendy James Posted May 1, 2006 Posted May 1, 2006 You do not have to pay for osCommerce but you will have to pay for a webhost, a merchant account (if you want to accept credit cards) and a secure certificate (if you want a secure site which you need if you are accepting cc payments) and ofcourse the domain name. :) Wendy James Creativity is allowing yourself to make mistakes. I'm really not too stupid, I do understand the most of somethings. ;)
Wendy James Posted May 1, 2006 Posted May 1, 2006 Well you have to decide how you want to take payments then go from there. If not going to use paypal or want a second credit card option besides paypal then you need a merchant account for processing the cards and a secure certificate so you can make your site secure. I would suggest checking with your host once you decide how you want to take payments if you are going to need the certificate. Some plans come with tthe secure stuff included or they have deals with companies and get a discount. You may also have to pay extra for the secure hosting. I don't need any payment options other then Paypal. I just want to open a shop.

Paypal is enough for me but I will check with my host to see what I will need.

neuron Posted May 1, 2006 Posted May 1, 2006 Dear Lincolnz, perhaps this would help, at this forum there is a quick install reference regarding installation maybe this would help.

Nope I'm lost! I can design my own site, I can design and make all my own product but do you think I can do this.........NOPE! Oh well I guess I will try to find another way to do it. See I just really don't want to start a Yahoo shop or an Ebay store cause I just don't like the layouts and looks but if that what I have to use and deal with then I guess that's what it's goin to be.
Wendy James Posted May 1, 2006 Posted May 1, 2006 If you are going to use paypal you do not need anything other than the webhost, domain and the osCommerce files that you can download here. http://www.oscommerce.com/solutions/downloads The documentation is also there for download and you may find them useful. You may want to install this http://www.oscommerce.com/community/contributions,2679 as a lot of people have issues with the module that comes with osCommerce not logging orders if the customer does not come back to the site. I have been told this contribution will solve the issue. I am not quite sure what other kind of information you are looking for. Wendy James Creativity is allowing yourself to make mistakes. ALL I want to do is install what ever it takes to get a store going (how ever I do that). I really didn't think I would have this much trouble. Maybe I will see if I know someone that can just do it for me before I smash my computer, I guess my last option is just to use the Paypal "buy now" buttons on my site. I don'y usually give up on something as simple as I sure this really is but man I close.

I read this thread and am not sure what your problem is. Do you have an oscommerce shop installed? If not, then that is all you should be trying to do right now. From the above, it appears that you don't but saying you are having problems with the downlaod isn't helpful. Do you mean you don't know how to download? To unzip? To install it? To start your browser? I'm sure you are feeling lost but you will find the help you have here if you narrow your problem down to something specific. Jack Ok ......I have downloaded and unzipped and sent it to a folder on my computer, HOW DO I INSTALL IT!! HOW TO I INSTALL AND START THE SHOP. I hope this is clear enough.
Guest Posted May 2, 2006 Posted May 2, 2006 Sorry........I have downloaded, I have unzipped it onto my computer, HOW DO I INSTALL IT TO START MY SHOP.
Jack_mcs Posted May 2, 2006 Posted May 2, 2006 Sorry........I have downloaded, I have unzipped it onto my computer, HOW DO I INSTALL IT TO START MY SHOP.Here are the instructions from the install file in the package. Please let us know on which step you are failing. 1. Extract the files from within the package unzip oscommerce-2.2ms2.zip -- or -- tar -xzf oscommerce-2.2ms2.tar.gz -- or -- use your favourite graphical application to extract the files, such as WinZip (http://www.winzip.com) 2. This creates a directory called 'oscommerce-2.2ms2'. Enter this directory and copy the 'catalog' directory to the webroot path of your webserver: cd oscommerce-2.2ms2 cp -R catalog /usr/local/apache/htdocs/ For this example, '/usr/local/apache/htdocs/' is used as the webroot path of the Apache webserver. Do the same for the 'admin' directory but rename the directory to a unique and secret name. This directory does not have to reside inside the catalog directory, though may need to be manually configured. 3. Using your favourite browser, go to the following address: http://[your site]/catalog/install and follow the instructions on the screen. Guest Posted May 2, 2006 Posted May 2, 2006 Yup................................I'm just stupid and lost. I will have to see if I can find someone to do it for me. I don't seem to have a clue with this. I'm sure it is a simple thing to do and am just not reading this stuff right but I just don't seem to have a clue with any of this. I just don't understand how to install the catalog onto my server. I don't wnat to waste anymore of anyones time, it makes me feel like even more of an idiot then I appear with all this.
butterflyfish Posted May 2, 2006 Posted May 2, 2006 Well you have to put them in your public_html folder on your server. Do you have a control panel? Or an ftp program? How do you normally get things onto your site?
Guest Posted May 2, 2006 Posted May 2, 2006 Well I normally just open the page I want to work on in Front Page then after I have modded it I just publish it. I do have a control panel. How do I put it in my public folder. And is it the "catalog" folder I put in the html folder?
Jack_mcs Posted May 3, 2006 Posted May 3, 2006 You can't use Frontpage to work on your shop, at least not easily. You can use it to upload but I wouldn't suggest that. You should download one of the free ftp programs, Filezilla, SmartFTP and many more, and use that to upload. Oscommerce can be very difficult to get a handle on. That is why I pointed out that you need to do just one step at a time. Most people go through the aggravation and feeling of helplessness that you are feeling now when trying to set up oscommerce, but they do it as long as they stick with it. So take each step and just work on that. If you get stuck, ask on the forums. You'll make it - just hang in there. :) Jack Support Links: For Hire: Contact me for anything you need help with for your shop: upgrading, hosting, repairs, code written, etc. All of My Addons Get the latest versions of my addons Recommended SEO Addons
