No taxes when shipping is free

Strange issue...

When a customer in my area orders from our site, it charges tax (sounds simple). We recently turned on the option to give the customer Free Shipping if the order is over $50.00. That works fine except when the shipping is free, the tax is always free too! We get tax when the order total is less than $50, but as soon as the total goes above $50, the tax goes away?!

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I'm also having this same problem. I have a client that needs one product not be calculated for shipping, but does need tax calculated for it. Anyone know how to get this working?

Check the tax zones and the priority of the tax rates for the problem of adding tax to orders. Customer accounts must be covered by tax zones otherwise the tax has no effect.

To assign shipping to specific products only you could deploy a contribution like this.

or you could change the products to 0 weight and then disable shipping. There other contributions that manipulate the weight in order to do that.
