Set of basic config. questions

I have a question or 2 about each section of the configuration. I've been reading pages & pages of these forums...and if my topic comes up, it's usually not my exact thing...or I just don't get the answer. But this forum is so very helpful and I am learning so much, by trial & error :) I ask here because I have to wait an entire day for replies from my host and usually they selectively answer...so I'm not much better off. THANKS in advance :) And please don't be discouraged by how 'beginner' my questions are...I bet there are others who don't know this either..

 

Product Listing:

"Display Product Quantity" - It asks for a number. What is this number for and does it display on the page?

I've left it with no number 0 and put in a number, and it doesn't seem to make any difference.

 

 

E-Mail Options:

"E-Mail Transport Method" Should it be set to sendmail or smtp?

"E-Mail Linefeeds" Should it be LF or CRLF?

"Use MIME HTML" Should it be true or false?

 

Downloads:

"Enable Downloads" Yes or no? If no, why not?

"Download by redirect" True? False?

 

GZip Compression:

What is GZip??

Do I enable it?

"Compression Level" set at 5. Is that good?

 

Sessions:

"Session Directory" What is a session?

Question listed as - If sessions are file based, store them in this directory.

How do I know if it is file based? And what directory should I store them in?

Right now it's set to /tmp

Everything else is set at False....is that right??

 

.....off topic...

 

In Catalog....when you add a catagory it asks "sort order"...what is that for. I change the number, doesn't seem to make any difference...

 

Backup...don't know which to choose...

THANK you so very much. Could you please tell me what question or search should I have done to have found this?? "Help" and "Search" is so hard for me...as I usually can't figure out the question to get an answer I can use.

 

I will read through this carefully and see what I can learn. I did read somewhere that the Knowledge Base is more for new stuff, under development kindof stuff and that I should stear clear of it. That's why I never even thought to look there.

You can reach it with the Network->Knowledge Base menu item above. Yes, they have changed the images and, probably, some of the instructions but some things are still the same. For the most part, it is pretty obvious if a section doesn not apply to your version. If that happens, then just assume it is for the next version and ignore it. The best way to do an oscommerc search is to go to google and type in

some words to search for site:www.oscommerce.com/forums

You wouldn't happen to know how to get a logo centered?? Or now to have more than one image...meaning having the logo on the left, as happens naturally, and then maybe putting in a really wide image to fill in the white space caused by the logo...which is large but I don't really want to shrink it?

 

Any thoughts?
