Display product model in shopping cart

Does anybody know how to add the product model (item number) to the shopping cart when the user views it? We get faxed orders sometimes when the customer is not comfortable with entering their credit card number online, and they will just print out a copy of their shopping cart and fax it to us. Unfortunately, there is no product number listed, so we have to enter the product name in our system and try to figure out which product they are trying to order. Then we don't know if they want the hardcover or paperback of a book, or the vhs or dvd of a video. If the product number was listed on the shopping cart page, it wouldn't be a problem. PHP is not my thing but I think I could handle altering the code if someone could just point me in the right direction. Thanks in advance!
