The public image, or, the misery of browser jaggies

Hello everyone, I'm in desperate need of a contribution for my site that will resize images. I'm feeling sick every time I look at the browser re-sized mick jagger style medium and small pics that are standard OSC fare.

I've tried some contributions but they have either

a) worked but done somehow reduced the colour depth of the smaller images to almost Sinclair Spectrum level.

or

B) not resized the 'medium' graphic, the one that appears on 'whats new', etc.

Anybody got any tips or tricks or help regarding the best contribution?

Ta very much :)

I've wrote a solution for this, based on the phpthumb script and some url rewriting... if there is some interest in this I'd be glad to provide the community with this...
