help regarding product weight, free shipping, and displaying 4 products per page

I have been working on a oscommerce shopping cart for about a week now. I have it exactly the way my employeer wants, however i am comming accross an unexpected issue. My employeer makes jewelry and her products don't weigh more than a 1/2 pound. The osshopping cart seems to add 3 pounds to the weight of each prduct. So instead of a product weighing .67 pounds the product weighs 3.67 pounds. I have been splitting my brain trying to figure out why, i am not sure if any one else is having that problem or if it is just me.. Please help reguarding that issue..

 

Also she wants to have only 4 products displayed per page on the product listing page. i have changed the value of the maxdisplay variable before, i thought it was in the applicationtop.php file, but i can't remember where i found that and now it seems that i can't find it again. Any advice on that will be greatly appreaciated.

 

One more thing i figured out how to offer free shipping in the untited states, unfortianatly the module includes Alaska and Hawaii. Is there any way to exclude those two states? This is all i need to finish this project, if any one could assist that would be very nice.
