Creating a new link

As i offer a free gift for anybody who purchases over a set amount i advertise this on the shoppiing cart page via an image that links to the free gifts category. The user can then select the free gift of choice. One problem... If a user has added many items to there cart and then clicks on the link below all cart items are removed! How do i create a link that remembers the session values?
