Ladydeb Posted April 3, 2006 Posted April 3, 2006 :) HI There, Anyone know how to change a stock template image on my web site to my own logo? Have asked before but had no replies....?? Any help would be really appreciated - I am a bit blonde though, so keeping it fairly simple would be fab! Many thanks Debbie
Jack_mcs Posted April 3, 2006 Posted April 3, 2006 You just replace the image with your own. Go to your site, right click on the logo and select properties. It will display the name of the logo file. Create some new image of the same type, rename it to have the same name as your logo and upload it to the images directory. spax Posted April 3, 2006 Posted April 3, 2006 Right click on the stock image, select properties and you will see the file name, its size and the path to it. Either upload your image as the same name, to the same place as the original or edit the name in the file that calls it. If the template doesn't dynamically size the image and your image isn't the same size as the original, you will need to alter the width and height attributes also.
Ladydeb Posted April 3, 2006 Author Posted April 3, 2006 Hi There !! I have tried to do as you both suggested - Liked the SNAP!! LOL But I get error messages saying the image has errors in it. Didn't know an image could have errors in it?? LOL Anyway, I contacted the template company and they are not being helpful, just told me that "the includes/header.php is on the server, you?ll need to set up FTP access and have a code editor like dreamweaver to make changes to the image". Now, that also makes not a bit of sense to me... Have the template company deliberately made it difficult so that I have to pay them to do the changes???? I wonder??? <_< Can anyone slowly and as if you were speaking to a very small child - explain what I need to do?? Its driving me nuts!!!!! I have already designed the logo, so just need to get it on there.... Many lollipops in advance! LOL Debs X
spax Posted April 3, 2006 Posted April 3, 2006 Ok Debs, put the lollipop down and...............LISTEN!!!!!! Thats how I talk to my kids anyway, but they just tell me to shut up! >_< What sort of error do you get? An image can be corrupt during upload. Is that what you mean? If you are replacing an image that does show, just do as suggested. Upload it to the same directory and give it the same name. Use an FTP client like SmartFTP, but don't use Dreamweaver. When you upload the image, make sure it is in Binary mode, not ASCII mode.
Ladydeb Posted April 3, 2006 Author Posted April 3, 2006   Stupid & Embarrassed Please refer to the above when trying to explain anything to me...because I haven't got a clue what I'm doing..LOL Well, I don't even understand how to get the web site information into the Smart FTP Client programme..DOH! Honestly, are you sure you wanna do this....it won't be nice and squishy...it'll be like walking (very slowly) on hot coals..LOLOL I have gone through the properties thing...the name ( I think! ) is: http://www.angellustlingerie.co.uk/images/m02.jpg But I have - by all the certainties in the known universe - probably got that wrong somehow too....LOL I don't think what I tried before was right. I renamed my new logo with the above...  Please stop laughing...! LOL Being this dim takes an awful lot of energy ya know. I was then informed that you can't use certain characters in file names and that there were errors in the image. I'm not even sure which directory I'm supposed to put the logo in - I don't even know where the directory IS!!! I am weeping into my cocoa as I type....I think this may be the end of my puter adventures, because it just makes no sense to me! I can drive a car - even to far away places on my own...BUT I can't do this!!!!!!!! Its SO frustrating!!! AAHHHHHH!!!!!! :o SORRY....am back now...calm and collected and waiting for the next bout of toe curling embarrassment to commence... If you feel TOO frightened to help me now...I understand completely....LOL So would I be! LOL Debs X
spax Posted April 4, 2006 Posted April 4, 2006 I am weeping into my cocoa as I type....I think this may be the end of my puter adventures, because it just makes no sense to me! I can drive a car - even to far away places on my own...BUT I can't do this!!!!!!!!Its SO frustrating!!! AAHHHHHH!!!!!! :o Awww, come on now, let's huggg for a while. Ok, now snap out of it :D First FTP - Open up SmartFTP. At the top you will see Address, this is your hosts ftp address. It will be something like ftp.yourhost.com but if you don't know it, just ask them. Next to Address you have Login, that will be the login name your host gave you. If you can't remember, ask them. Next to Login is Password. Again if you can't remember, ask your host. Next is Port. This one we know don't we?..............No? Ok, it's 21. Type 21 in there. If none of these options are typable (is that a word?) you probably have Anonymous selected. If so, hit the button there. If you have been entering all your details, don't worry about that one. Still with me?............. :-" ..............I can wait.......... ...........Ahh good, well done! Ok, hit the green arrow and if the wind is blowing in the right direction, you will have connected to your remote server. You'll know if you have because all your folders will appear in the remote browser. If you see some folders saying 'FBI' or 'CIA - Top Secret' disconnect immediately, pull the plug, give your PC to your neighbour as a gift, grow a moustache and take a holiday! On the other hand, if you see a folder called docs or htdocs or whatsupdoc (nah I made that one up), you've cracked it. Double click on that folder, whatever it's called, that is the document root. Once in that, you will see a folder called 'images' and thats the one we want so double click that. Before you do anything, above the remote browser, you have a tool bar. There are a few little boxes, one is named ASCII, the next is named 10101 or Binary, click on that one. Now we are in Binary mode. Back to the top, on the tool bar you will see FTP, click on that and you'll see Local Browser click on that and you'll see your PC folder structure. Navigate to where you have your image you want to upload. Right click on it and rename it m02. BTW, your image must be a .jpg for this to work because the one we are replacing is. If it is a .gif or .png, it won't be found unless you go into the code and change its extension and if we could do that, we could just change its name as well. So you have renamed your image on your PC, so that now it is called m02.jpg. Click on it, keep the mouse button down and drag it over to the Remote Browser that you have your images folder open in. When you have it over there, let go of the mouse button and it will start to upload. Now call your website in your browser, I mean IE, Firefox or whatever you surf with and you should see your luverly new image gleaming back at you. Fingers crossed! ;)
Ladydeb Posted April 4, 2006 Author Posted April 4, 2006 Well.....you are a very VERY brave man!!!! My feverish perversity in managing to get just about EVERYTHING wrong - has buckled the very strongest broad shoulders before now....LOLOL I have got right through to the - get myself into Binary mode - step....YEEEHAAAH !!!!!!!!! Never were bigger steps taken by man kind than to have achieved so much. :D However, I have minutely searched all the tool bars for the FTP button to click on....it is however, not there. I have hovered over everything remotely hoverable and nothing comes up with FTP on the tool bar??? Is it somewhere else?? Have a developed holes in my vision from too much frustrated peering at the pc monitor?? Local Browser, therefore is also a mysterious box which hides itself away from me - am getting decidedly paranoid that the computer is having a laugh at my expense...!! LOL <_< Anyway, there I am stuck. I tried uploading the image using the browse thing at the bottom, and I seem to have done something because now I have a lovely little box in the space which used to have picture on my web site... Well, at least its different, not quite how I envisaged it, but definitely different! lOL Another thing that may prove to be a problem...there were originially two images at the top of the page, where the logo should go. Do I just need to delete the second image, before my own logo can be put in place and extend across the whole of the top of the page? Yet another question that will cause my dunderhead to furrow with frustration....LOL Thanks so much and an extra chocolately curly wurly to you for all you've done so far! Debs X  (don't know why that smiley suits me so much, theres an uncanny resemblance!) LOL
spax Posted April 4, 2006 Posted April 4, 2006 Thanks for the Curly Wurly, I was getting fed up with lollipops. >_< Although I have to go out now so I'll have it later. It is good you can get into your site via FTP now, we are advancing. So now you can, right click on that other image, see what it is called and rename it or delete it with the SmartFTP. Infact do that to the original one also, so there is no confusion. Make a note of their dimensions, width and height. Don't worry about the Local Browser, just go to your image on your computer, right click on it and copy, then go to your images folder in SmartFTP, right click again and paste it straight in there. Like I said before, I don't know if your template dynamically sizes images but if it doesn't we can do some more jiggery pokery. What you can do if that is the case is slice your image in two parts, then name the two images m02.jpg and whatever the other is called. If not, we will look at the code and do it properly lol. :D
Ladydeb Posted April 4, 2006 Author Posted April 4, 2006 Hello u again! Glad you're enjoying your curly wurly energy boost! LOL I had a hunch you might need it while riding this very bumpy rodeo with me! LOLOL Keep chewing cos I've a feeling the hair follicle pulling is not gonna end quite yet! :P I wrote down the image properties - I did the deleting. I copy and pasted my lovely logo into SmartFTP and VOILE!!! Nothing!! LOLOLOLOL :D I gotta laugh, cos this nightmare would be getting pretty darned scary otherwise...LOL Sorry, must stop LOLLING - its not helping matters any.... I have deleted the original images tho....they've phwoofed away and I'm left with two boxes with pretty little boxes in the corner. There IS an image called m02 (its definitely a jpg too) in the images folder...but it seems to be having a jolly game of hide and seek with me - cos it's not appearing on the site. Don't know what I did? Don't know what to do to make what I did better?! You are the master of all oricles of all knowledge - I am but a twig of ignorance! :D Honestly, I'm not as bizarre as I seem...just have a warped sense of humour....LOL Am awaiting your venerable reply.. Debs X
modulate Posted April 4, 2006 Posted April 4, 2006 Debs, sorry to distract your original question, but your template is excellant!! Where or how did you create that, did someone work on the design for you?
Ladydeb Posted April 4, 2006 Author Posted April 4, 2006 Hi There Bob, After many many false starts with trying to get a web site up and running....(and it is a VERY long story). I gave up and purchased the template - it wasn't customised to my requirements as I couldn't afford to have that done. AND I wanted to make the site my own by implementing changes myself and designing the logo etc. Designing it was the easy part...its the implementing it thats SO frustrating, but thanks to you FABULOUS people (especially spax - of course - a gentleman and a very patient scholar!) - I might now be able to make the changes I want to. I have many more products to introduce to the store - so theres a fair amount of work still to be done. But I'm hoping to be up and running by the end of next week - if I can sort the logo problem out. Thankyou for your kind words about my store...it nice to know it looks ok.... Hope I don't spoil it with the changes I intend to make! Anyway Bob, take care! Debs X
spax Posted April 4, 2006 Posted April 4, 2006 I just tried to look at the image and I see the error message. The only thing I can think of, is it has been uploaded in ASCII mode. Try it again, make sure Binary is selected and if it isn't already, click on the Passive Mode button (which is the one 2nd to the right of the Binary button or 10101).
Ladydeb Posted April 5, 2006 Author Posted April 5, 2006 HI ! I just managed to replace the guy on the board image which appears on the page after a purchase has been made. Looks a lot better than the silly surfer! LOL :D :) :D :) am smiling stead of frowning - just for a change! LOL Have tried ensuring I am in binary and passive mode for copy and pasting the logo image, but to no avail. It still won't load properly. I e-mailed the template company this morning to see if they might know whats wrong. But I doubt they will help - not unless there's more green papery stuff coming their way. Which is a bit off considering the template I purchased from them may be of no use to me if I can't change the logo to one which is related to my web site. Meaning I will have wasted the money in the first place! <_< Anyway, just wanted to say a big THANKYOU spax for all your help so far. You have given me that first bit of knowledge to help me begin to understand the processes involved. I was really stumbling round in the dark before - with not a clue which steps to take. Thankyou so much! I will just have to wait until a solution turns up - and I can get the site off and running! Debs X PS I have definitely overwritten the original picture in SmartFTP - I didn't get the same pop up box asking if I wanted to overwrite the first few times I tried it. But I was asked if I wanted to do this the last time I tried and I did so. But still didn't work....
Ladydeb Posted April 5, 2006 Author Posted April 5, 2006 Oh..... Have been tinkering and have now got a small sized logo in the top right hand corner of my page. It looks to me like the template has two separate boxes which are designed to have a picture in each. So I can't place my logo across the entire top of the page. And, although the logo is quite large, it is displaying as very small on the site. Anyone any ideas??? I am SO excited, cos its definitely a step forward! Debs XX :)
Ladydeb Posted April 5, 2006 Author Posted April 5, 2006 Ok...have figured something else out! The template must somehow be resizing the image as the properties say it is 112 pixels high and 337 wide - it has resized it to the original width of the box the template stock image was in. So instead of being 644 px which would cover the entire area, it is 337 px. But in order to keep the dimensions in proportion, it has also made the image shorter than the original image which was 112 pxs. I know that probably made no sense whatsoever, but I know what I mean... LOL Anyone any idea how to make the two boxes into only one box, so that the image can be displayed across the entire length of the page??? Debs XXX :D :) :D
Ladydeb Posted April 5, 2006 Author Posted April 5, 2006 HI AGAIN! I got a reply from the template company to say that I needed to alter the values in the includes/header.php file - so that I could change the picture from 2 to 1 by deleting the values from the unwanted picture. I did it and managed to NOT delete the whole site!!!! Phew!! I have a logo in place!! Its a bit pixelated tho. So I need to work on that. BUT - the great news is that I only need to copy and paste the re-worked logo into the images files in SmartFTP. I can do that.... I'm SO relieved to be able to get a step further at last!!!! ITS COOL!! Thanks spax for everything. I hope that if (or more likely 'when') I turn up with more questions in future you won't mind giving me a hand again. Cos you made it seem a lot easier than I at first thought it was going to be! spax for President - I say!! B) - the King of all things chocolatey!! Except the Boaster biscuits cos they're mine! Sorry, but can't share 'em - its absolutely against all laws in the Kingdom of Confusedshire! LOL X Debs :D
spax Posted April 5, 2006 Posted April 5, 2006 YEEEEHAAA!!!!!! Well done Debs, you did good. Award yourself a cornflake. :D I was just loading the lorry up to move from my home in Enlightenedshire, down to you in Confusedshire. BTW, we only eat Digestives with our cuppas here. One thing Deb, I did say earlier, take the dimensions of the images so you can slice yours in two and save them as the two that were default to the template - m02.jpg and m03.jpg. Reading your success has made a bad day good. If Arsenal win later tonight, the day will be perfect. Always glad to help, anytime. Peter. ps: Just took a look at your website and it is great, a big  The logo was worth the work. I spent about an hour drooling.......errr.......looking I mean, just for research you understand :-" and I think you have a winner. The very best of luck with it.
Ladydeb Posted April 5, 2006 Author Posted April 5, 2006 HI There! With all the Yeehaa'ss I'm startin to feel like Calamity Jane! LOLOL I will upon my oath share my digestives with you - this is not a prince among biscuits - and its not a Viscount either!! LOLOLOL :D Yes, I know that wasn't funny, but I gotta keep trying cos I am developing my sense of humour to use as a lethal weapon - if in fear for my life at any time in the future I am hoping to use it to despatch my foe with mortal laughter! LOLOL See, told ya it wasn't funny. Anyway, back to reality :( . What time did ya check the site? I have made a couple of small alterations - as there was another photo which didn't quite fit in with the theme (very cheeky as it is!), so I changed that to an information box - with the hope that the search engines might pick up some of the keywords.... Here's another thing I'm not sure of......NO....PLEASE DON'T RUN AWAY.....LOLOL How do you get Google and the other search engines to pick up your site?? As this is my first site, I really don't know. Do you have to register with them in some way?? Another dumb question, no doubt! LOL yes, you can stop falling off yer executive chair now.....!! Am just off out to take my mutley hound to the park for a game of football, so will catch ya laters! X Debs PS The cornflake tasted great.....really filling!!!!!! and very crispy! LOL
spax Posted April 6, 2006 Posted April 6, 2006 How do you get Google and the other search engines to pick up your site?? As this is my first site, I really don't know. Do you have to register with them in some way?? Another dumb question, no doubt! LOL yes, you can stop falling off yer executive chair now.....!! Ahh!!! The great enigma that is......and always whisper it gently as you bow your head.....Google! The short answer to that is......there is no short answer. There are so so many things you need to do for ultimate SEO (Search Engine Optimisation); Keyword Density yet avoiding Keyword Stuffing, Backlinks (get some from Ebay, Amazon, Yahoo etc and you're laughing), using Semantic Code; avoiding unecessary code like loads of JavaScripts in the <head> or loads of Nested Tables........hmmm! , Proper use of ALT tags or TITLE for Firefox, well defined META tags, text based navigation as opposed to image based navigation, Site Map - must have! blah, blah, blah Do all that and more, your SERPs (Search Engine Result Pages) will rank Numero Uno.........Just as soon as you get out of the........SANDBOX!!!!! >_< The fabled sandbox is a state of limbo Google keeps you in, until it has wiped its feet on you enough, that you know you will never be as important as the Big G. Googlebot and all the other bots will crawl your pages automatically. Some will index them straight away, others will take a bit of time, Google could take a year. You can check your log files and see who is crawling. Although I guess the bots may blow a fuse on your site :D One thing I would suggest, get yourself listed on as many business search engines (business listings) as you can. A lot of them are free and some are very good. Kelly Search, for instance, always ranks high in Google. Get listed on that and you have some good backlinking. ;)
Ladydeb Posted April 7, 2006 Author Posted April 7, 2006 Hi!! Just got back from a whistlestop trip to London. Am fair pooped! LOL As with all things with the vaguest hint of technicality - my gray matter became decidedly crunchier while reading your last post! LOLOL I will disect it word by word and research it - its great to have somewhere to begin tho! :D Did you chortle at my naivety?? I do ALL the time - never fail to surprise myself with how much I don't know about things! LOLOL  Anyway, am going to make myself a lovely cuppa - borrow a digestive from you - and put my poor battered feet up! Thankyou again! For all your help - you really are a super STAR! IF you ever decide you wouldn't mind something cheeky from my website - let me know and you will get a very VERY good deal! Seriously - you've helped me so much - I would be honoured to put something back into the generosity pot. Take care for now! X Debs :P
spax Posted April 8, 2006 Posted April 8, 2006 Thankyou again! For all your help - you really are a super STAR! IF you ever decide you wouldn't mind something cheeky from my website - let me know and you will get a very VERY good deal! Seriously - you've helped me so much - I would be honoured to put something back into the generosity pot. Thanks for the offer Debs, you could have delivered it during your trip. Where abouts in 'The Smoke' were you? Actually, my stocking wearing days are long gone. I just can't be doing with all that leg shaving any more. It's the chafe! >_<
Ladydeb Posted April 8, 2006 Author Posted April 8, 2006 Hi! Actually went to (OF ALL THINGS!!......) a punk gig at the 100 Club on Oxford Street!! LOLOLOL My better half was, and still is, a huge Sex Pistols fan. So we went to see a tribute band called the Sex Pistols Experience who were performing there. Apparently the 100 Club was the venue the Pistols played every Thursday night in their early days. Definitely an experience!! :D LOLOL Lots and lots of Ol' Punks looking a bit worse for wear! Great people tho! I always say you only live once and life is for living - so GO FOR IT!!! I love to go places and experience different situations...keeps the old grey matter bouncy! LOL I was thinking that you might want some lingerie for your other half - actually I realised that with your name being Peter you just might not be the stocking wearing type! And anyway its the digestives ya know that cause all the chaffing! LOLOL SO drying to the skin.....so you'll have to give them all to ME!! LOLOL :D (I'll try ANYTHING to raid other people's biscuit tins!) LOL Here's a question thats TOTALLY off subject! I don't suppose you know anyone that has a puppy going spare?? I lost my Collie dog 'Lady' 2 weeks ago and my remaining dog - a little Heinz - is pining away. So am on the look out for another 57 variety to keep her company. She doesn't like adult dogs too much - but is very motherly so will take to a pup just fine. If it would be no trouble would ya let me know if you hear of any? It would be very much appreciated...thanks. Its proving much more difficult than I thought! I even have my lingerie supplier looking out for one for me! LOLOL Anyway, am off again for now... Seriously - the offer on the lingerie still stands. Just let me know! PM me if its just too embarassing on here! LOLOL :D Take care Debs X Have you had a look at the site - I changed a couple more things...looking better I think!
spax Posted April 8, 2006 Posted April 8, 2006 Some stockings for my missus? That would be an improvement, cos then she'd look like one of those bank robbers. Was never into Punk myself, not paying my poll tax once was the closest I got to anarchy. Although I paid that eventually, but it was two weeks late. I know someone that plays for Europes leading Black Sabbath, Ozzy tribute band. They are here if anyone wants to check them out: The Sabbath I don't know many doggy people but I'll, sniff around, as it were. I checked your site, only because you asked me to  and it looks better every time I see it. I am sure it will be hugely successful.
