You can appeal the chargeback and keep your sale if you have proper documentation. You need a real merchant account to have support in this arena. Preventing a legitimate charge involves checking out the customer before shipping. Verify their shipping and billing addresses. You can call the issuing bank to verify cardholder information as well. Always use delivery confirmation when shipping products. Tim
Jack_mcs Posted April 1, 2006 Posted April 1, 2006 Depending upon your product line, paypal may provide fraud protection. It's not worth a lot but is better than nothing. You have to meet a certain number of requirements to qualify but it may be worth looking into. Go to paypal and reseach the requirements for fraud. sra4031 Posted April 1, 2006 Posted April 1, 2006 Always check with your processor about fraud protection. If you are going to use paypal, make sure to print out the TOS, and anything they have regarding security. Get an SSL certificate as well. If you choose to use a processor like the bank where your deposit account is at, or an outside processor like Net1, go by the guidelines they layout. Never use the force transaction option, even f it means losing a sale. If a customers card is declined, and customer swears it is good, have them contact their provider, even if i your own mother. I use AVS and CVV verification with IP logging, and I try to verify any orders that the ship to is different than the bill to address. Some processors offer chargeback protection and you have to follow their procedures to the letter. Here is a link from an osCommerce sponsor ad. http://www.maxmind.com/app/ccv_overview

The police werent interested and said to pursue thru small claims.. This will happen with most online businesses sooner or later

The good news is in America laws are more stict than that, the bad news is because it is such a big problem, and credit card companies is losing big money (Credit Card companies lobbied for the laws, if it was the merchants having all the problems we would be fed to the sharks.) Sorry to hear about the misfourtune. Will the police let you file fraud charges, or theft by deception?
