Configuration.php error

I'm having a problem with the configure.php file. I'm getting the error that was addressed in the post installation fixes. I've read the article but have been going around and 'round with my hosting company about the write permissions. I need to know if these are changes that I can make to the code or if this has to be applied to the file by the system administrator. I have the ability to give "write" permissions to certain folders on my site, but I have no way of setting permissions to particular files. Could someone enlighten me on this please. My ignorance is getting in the way of my problem.

Post-Installation

After installing osCommerce follow these steps for post-installation:

1. Rename the catalog/install folder or delete it.

2. Reset the permissions on catalog/includes/configure.php to 644 (if you are still getting the warning message at the top of the page after setting this configure.php files to 644 then set the catalog/includes/configure.php file to 444 which is read only - this happens on some servers that have been updated for security reasons).

3. Set the permissions on catalog/images directory to 777

4. Set the permissions on admin/images/graphs directory to 777

5. Create the directory admin/backups and set the permissions to 777 (this is the folder to store the database backup of your store in the "Tools" section of the store admin).

Why can you not change permissions on your files? Are you on a windows server?

The Knowledge Base is a wonderful thing.

Do you have a problem? Have you checked out Common Problems?

There are many very useful osC Contributions

Are you having trouble with a installed contribution? Have you checked out the support thread found Here

Do they have linux hosting plans? If so I would see about getting on one. If not I would rethink my hosting arrangments as hosting on a windows server is usually more trouble than it is worth as you are starting to see with the permissions problems..
