how do is setup authentication for the admin section?

A few different ways but the easiest by far is to go to your hosting control panel and look for the password protect directories ( or something similar) link and click on it. You then click on the admin folder and add the username and password you want to use.

The Knowledge Base is a wonderful thing.

Do you have a problem? Have you checked out Common Problems?

There are many very useful osC Contributions

Are you having trouble with a installed contribution? Have you checked out the support thread found Here

I went to my control panel at my webhosting provider with the intention of securing my admin folder but it said to only protect the file using the above method (which seems easiest) if you don't have a ht access file. - would it be okay to do it as above anyway ? (there is a htaccess file but I don't know what to do with it or if my admin file is protected - needs to be done with the htaccess file ???
