dmelsgifts Posted March 28, 2006 Posted March 28, 2006 I am just getting back into the swing of the whole web page thing again, having not been in it for about 15 years, and then just as a pastime. Anyway, I've been looking through thequestions and answers and everyone seems to be light years ahead of me. The one thing I have going for me is that I am not a quitter, so if someone can tell me how I go about editing the main text on the OS template, I would be forever grateful. I have a minute knowledge of html, and feel that I can re-learn it, but I can't figure out how to get to the files they talk about on the first page of the template. I know that sounds very stupid of me, but at this point, I think if I can find that out, I can have something to keep me occupied for a while. The other question I have is, do I have to upload the template to my server before I can make any changes? My catalog file has nothing in it at present. I hope I even know enough to make my questions make sense, but that is doubtful at this point also. Any help anyone can give me would be appreciated.

Wow you have a decent amount of work ahead for you and I unfortunately am new to this community but I have successfully installed the program into my server so I can get you started and hopefully if you have more questions someone else here can pick up where I left off (or left out). First you need to read the included documentation in order to set up a secure htaccess file onto your server so it makes it harder for anyone to hack into your admin area. I know it is long winded but it is not too difficult if you have some patience and you look up what you don't know on Google. You need to read it carefully and make sure your web host has the necessary files and that you set up your database as instructed because you need those values to install this program. (eg. hostname, username, and password for the database) Next you need to go to the osCommerce file you downloaded from here and upload all 995 files in 85 folders found in the "catalog" folder from osCommerce to your website. All I did was open the osCommerce folder (unzip it) then drop the whole catalog folder into my FTP onto my website. So your FTP would look like if your URL was www.mywebspace.com : MYWEBSPACE.COM catalog (with the 995 files in 85 folders) Next you need to go to the install part. Type in your browser http://www.mywebspace.com/catalog/install/ if you followed all the instructions from the pdf file you should have all the information you need to fill in the blanks and what needs to be left alone. Just have the pdf file open and install and it is not too hard. As for the text (once you get to it) it is all located in the file "index.php" found in the mywebspace.com/catalog//includes/languages/english/ folder. Hope that gets you started
