eyespyyou Posted March 28, 2006 Posted March 28, 2006 As you quickly learn from my question, I know very little if any about writing HTML or PHP Language. I am so use to using a website builder - WUSWUG. I am building a large shopping cart on this site builder, but am running into issues of crashing kicking me back to my desktop. I was introduced to OScommerce and have downloaded to my desktop today. If I understand correctly, I have to PTP it to my hosting company in my account before I can work on it or start building my site. Correct? Is there a large learning curve for someone like me? Do I need a shopping cart ecommerce program like 2checkout, or CCNow, or does this program work as a credit card gateway? I hate to sound so novice, but if you don't ask, you want find out. Richard :-"
michi Posted March 28, 2006 Posted March 28, 2006 It's correct, you have to FTP the files to your host. I intend that is strongest recomended to know php and html to work satisfactory with the osCommerce. If you don't know, try to study and learn. It's not difficult. You have to go one step first. If you don't get, you can contract someone who knows those tecnologies. I could be wrong, this is only my opinion. You could see the opinion of the others members and made a conclusion.
spax Posted March 28, 2006 Posted March 28, 2006 You don't have to develop on your web server, you can do it on your local machine (PC). To do that though, if you want to see how your store will look on the web, you will need PHP, MySql, Apache and phpMyAdmin also on your PC. A WYSIWYG editor is a great tool, in as far as you can open the complete application and change from page to page, but in truth, they aren't really 'what you see is what you get' That isn't a big deal in itself, all you need is to download XAMPP or WAMP. Either one of those packages will install all you need, to where you need it. WAMP is Windows specific. You don't need to be a programming guru, to work on OSC, but I think the more knowledge you have the better. If your HTML isn't up to scratch, let alone your PHP, you will hit problems along the way. There will be times when you will delete something you shouldn't have or put some HTML in the wrong place. If you don't understand what you are looking at or for, it will take a long time. Maybe the easiest way to go is to download the Simple Template System (STS) from what I know of it - I haven't used it - it allows you to build a normal HTML page and simply incorporate it into OSC. You will still get problems, but that is why the forum is here. Good luck!
