"Unable to connect to database server!" - Please help, I'm trying to recover MySQL database

I'm trying to get my Oscommerce store back online after a server failure few days ago. I ended up having to do a full O.S reload. But fortunately, I didn't loose any data at all and was able to recover everything on the drive.

However, my MySQL dump file seem to be corrupted so I couldn't use it to restore. :( But on the bright side, the entire MySQL data directory seems to be OK. So after getting MySQL reloaded on the new box, I copied all the .MYD, .MYI and .FRM files into the new MySQL directory. But it is now giving me the error "Unable to connect to database server!" when I go to the catalog or the admin-pannel.

I have checked the username/password for the MySQL account. Addititionally, I have confirmed that the MySQL server is working properly. Other applications beside Oscommerce are back-up running without any problem. I guess OSC is more finicky with the MySQL DB than other apps.

Can you please help point me to the right direction on how to properly recover my store? Thanks in advance for your help.

Have you checked the DB_SERVER parameter in the configure.php file?

The error message suggests it can't connect to the server and hasn't got as far as trying to connect to the database.
