Some questions on the use of OsC

I?m checking out the viability of OsC for my site. My site is presently all html with Paypal buttons.

I?m presently in the process of applying to one of the UK?s high streets banks for an account to accept online credit card transactions. Unfortunately I still not sure of how everything works, so can someone help out with some questions please?

May I ask you keep the answers simple please, don?t assume I know anything, especially acronyms etc.

1 Is there an overview of what OsC can do, bit like a ?sales brochure? I suppose, as I seems to have missed it, or I?m looking in the wrong places?

2 Will OsC ?communicate? directly with the banks system, or do I need something else?

3 What sort of fee?s do I need to pay to use OsC to run my site, is there any licence fee?s etc.?

4 Can I build my site, then upload it like normal web sites (read somewhere something that has put doubt in my mind regarding this)?

5 I?m hopefully going to get help with the site design, but what?s the best/easiest way to edit the site appearance?

6 Regarding the cc transactions, do I need to load some parts of OsC on to some secure webspace, or what is the set-up with this as I?ve read comments about buying certificates?

I won?t ask anything else for the moment.

Can I thank you in advance for any help and guidance :D

If you want to continue to use paypal, then there are several extra things to install (we usually call them contributions) that would allow you to use paypal. There are also "contributions" that work with other payment processing systems.

OSC is completely free. THe only you will have to pay for is webhosting which is usually under $20/month if you don't get too many visitors.

If you shop around for a host you might be able to get free shared ssl which would save you $$ but might not be suitable if you are going for an ultra proffessional look.

Look at some other online shops to see what can be done. on the main page there is a link to online shops.

You can also demo the admin section by clicking showcases at the top.

Once you get going, you will find this is so much better than just a regular site with paypal buttons.

True there is alot of contributations out there for many payment methods However I would choose a payment method that is A) Already in the OSC platform or B) has a contributation for the payment method. These are some: Paypal, Paypal IPN, Linkpoint, Authorize.net, and so on. Also as far as hosting goes here is a link to My Store which has a link for cheap reliable hosting. These are just a couple of ideas to think about. OSC is a great shopping program with great people in the forums that will help you with anything they can help you with.

Good luck in your indevours

Probably too many questions to deal with in one thread. You might get lucky and have someone to take the time to answer all your questions. ANy way I'll throw my 2 cents in on two of them

Nothing zip nada

Getting a SSL certificate is recommended. Makes peoples personal information safe. You can pay as little as $50 or as much as you like for varous flavours. Some servers offer shared certificates which can be a cheaper alternative.

Backup before making changes. Backup before making changes! Backup before making changes!!

You did do a backup? eh?
