Show more items in Specials/Whats New Boxes?

I have started to create a store with a customised layout and i want to stretch the width of the specials and whats new boxes to show more than just one item. Is there a simple way to do this or maybe a contribution somewhere? As I'm unable to find any info on this site! :'(

Use this contribution - this scrolls several specials through the Specials box. Just modify the code so it doesn't scroll ;-)
