Guest Posted March 25, 2006 Posted March 25, 2006 Hi guys, I guess my suggestion stems from the fact that there are a whole slew of really great contribs that people have developed. I too am even working on one that I think people will find extremely useful, but the dilemma that I have been running into the majority of the time is that people can add bug fixes or additions to a mod in the contrib areas, but are not providing enough information as to how far back in a list of submissions one should go to get a reasonably safe or working contrib or worse yet, you have to sift through everything people have submitted and only cross your fingers that you are getting everything necessary to apply a new contrib to your osc installation and have it work. So, if there would be any way to have some sort of standardization implemented that contributors would have to follow for submissions AS WELL AS updates/fixes, I think could really smoooth out a bunch of things for people seeking to use the contribs. Perhaps some sort of process that either requires that people submitting updates/fixes would have to choose from a version of the contrib that their fix applied to and possibly even a link in their submission that would point to that working base contrib version. In essence, during the submission stage of adding to an existing contrib, a select element is presented that lets the contributor select which version he/she made this fix/update to so that when they complete their submission, the resulting post would then contain a link to that version so that if a new person were wanting to use this contrib, but implement the fixes of other people, then at least the person would have a base contrib that he/she could begin with. Either that, or perhaps require that a contributor provide the entire contrib, including their updates/fixes as part of their submission. I don't install a lot of these contribs because I am far too afraid of exactly which version is a good one and most of all, in the latest version, is it a FULL contrib or just an update to an update...etc...etc. This is the root of my suggestion and I think this would help a large number of people out when trying to decide what is a safe place to begin with a contib that has a number of people adding things to it. Thanks
