1Putts Posted March 25, 2006 Posted March 25, 2006 This is my third OSC site. While they all have similar features, I really tried to go for a different look on this one. One of the things I did was, depending on which page you are looking at, it loads images from a predefined set randomly. For example, under Products > Guitars, there are 16 different guitar images that could be shown in the main area. I also used the left banner to do something similar while the right banner remains static (with a list of manufacturers). I wanted to add some visual variety to the mix. The site has been live for a little over a month now. The Guitar World

Makes me want to buy another guitar (I have 10 already) Nice to see lots of information on the products which is important as many of these are big ticket items. Nice design easy to get around. I like the funky colours. Only one thing confused me I thought when I clicked something in the products box I would be able to buy stuff right away but instead it is information about those products. Same goes for the navagation links in the right side the header. Overall a great job!! Backup before making changes. Backup before making changes! Backup before making changes!! You did do a backup? eh?
spax Posted March 26, 2006 Posted March 26, 2006 I like it, you have done a good job. Just one small point, you have a nav button named 'Continue' that takes you back to the first page. What is wrong with 'Home'? I think 'Continue' is a bit confusing when the whole world recognizes 'Home'.
spax Posted March 27, 2006 Posted March 27, 2006 I have only just noticed, the Continue button is OSC default. I still think Home is better recognised though. :-"
1Putts Posted March 27, 2006 Author Posted March 27, 2006 Really nice site. I get what you're saying about the confusion between the "Products" and "For Sale" areas. The idea is that the "Products" pages are just general info about the types of products they normally carry - brands and such. Initially they weren't going to offer any specific products for sale online but wanted to do so in the future. So I had initially disabled all the e-commerce functionality and created all the general products pages since using the OSC categories and products for just general info doesn't cut it. Naturally, 5 seconds after I was done, they wanted to start offering some used gear online and gradually increased that to some new stuff as well - hence the "For Sale" area. But you're right, it is a little confusing. I'll probably add some links from the Product pages to the "For Sale" pages with some text like "Check out some of the things we're currently selling online" ...just something to brige that gap. Thanks again for taking the time to check out the site and comment. I appreciate it.

I agree, "Home" would probably be more accurate a description. Luckily it's just a matter of changing the button. But the "Continue" doesn't bother me so much either. Thanks again...
Chance Posted March 27, 2006 Posted March 27, 2006 Lots of text on the index and not many products. You may want to think of moving the "about the company" stuff to the company page, and moving the products the customers can buy online above the scroll on your index. My advice comes in two flavors- Pick the one that won't offend you. Hard and Cynical: How to Make a Horrible osCommerce Site Warm and Fuzzy: How to Make an Awesome osCommerce Site
codex Posted March 27, 2006 Posted March 27, 2006 what contributions do you use for this monster ? :)

You may want to think of moving the "about the company" stuff to the company page, and moving the products the customers can buy online above the scroll on your index. Thank you...good point. They want the company text where it is so I moved the new produts up and put the testimonials at the bottom. Looks much better now...thanks again.
1Putts Posted March 28, 2006 Author Posted March 28, 2006 what contributions do you use for this monster ? :) Way too many! Seriously, the list is long. Mind you, this particular site didn't necessarily need all of them but I always start from my "stock" code base which includes dozens of the fine contributions that have been submitted. I'd say more than half of them are on the Admin side which, of course, the visitor can't see. There are also many of my own little tweaks here and there.

♥Vger Posted March 28, 2006 Posted March 28, 2006 Only one Burns, and no Martin, Hofner, Gretsch or Rickenbackers at all - nice website - shame about the guitars. Vger

(I just wanted to say "Axe" like an 80's metal band rocker, sorry) Well, it's not my store but you're welcome to grow your hair out and buy an axe from them anyway. I'd suggest the BC Rich Archtop. You can say "axe"...I believe it's still a valid term used amongst the hair-metal players. Then again, I'm a drummer so what do I know...
1Putts Posted March 28, 2006 Author Posted March 28, 2006 Only one Burns, and no Martin, Hofner, Gretsch or Rickenbackers at all - nice website - shame about the guitars. Vger Thanks. The "For Sale" is just a smattering of some new and used stuff they have...it would take me until next year to add everything and golf season is about to start. I'm pretty sure the last time I was in there I saw some Martin's and a few Gretsch instruments...even one Rickenbacker bass (the McCartney style). Pretty cool looking piece.
Flyer5 Posted March 28, 2006 Posted March 28, 2006 Only one Burns, and no Martin, Hofner, Gretsch or Rickenbackers at all - nice website - shame about the guitars. Vger i have lots of gretsch.. well i have 8 in stock at the mo! none of the others tho :( but if you fancy a new Gretsch vger.... :)
tampatiki Posted April 2, 2006 Posted April 2, 2006 That looks very nice. I am just starting to get a site set up so looking at what everyone else has already done it helping me get some ideas started and get to know what is capable in OSC. Looking for the contribs now! Great work, for sure.
dynamoeffects Posted April 11, 2006 Posted April 11, 2006 Just another note of praise: Great looking site! Very professional and clean. It's inviting and makes you want to dig around and look at all the products. Your client should be very happy. Please use the forums for support! I am happy to help you here, but I am unable to offer free technical support over instant messenger or e-mail.
chooch Posted May 3, 2006 Posted May 3, 2006 stock design but nice colours... try using a script to jazz up your product info pages Upon receiving fixes and advice, too many people don't bother to post updates informing the forum of how it went. Until of course they need help again on other issues and they come running back! Why receive the information you require in good faith for free, only to then have the attitude to ignore the people who gave it to you? There's no harm in saying, 'Thanks, it worked'. On the contrary, it creates a better atmosphere. CHOOCH
