iainsanderson Posted March 24, 2006 Posted March 24, 2006 Hi All, I am having a problem with my site www.english-books-direct.com/catalog/index.php The problem being that it is running very slow, the site isn't active yet as I have loads to do to it, but I have noticed when trying to look at the products on the index.php page that it takes up to 20 secs to load. I can get into the admin area and it loads very fast. I have spoken to my hosting company and they had me run traceroutes and ping they said that both were high ? and that I had a problem with my connection. If I had a problem with my connection it would not just affect my site would it ? I can get onto and have no problem with any other site. Has anyone else got problems like this ? They also said that it may have something to do with the htaccess file on my site ? Please help
kgt Posted March 24, 2006 Posted March 24, 2006 See: http://www.oscommerce.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=119077 See if it gets you anywhere. You'll need to play around, since at 20 seconds there's obviously something not working right, and it's probably a combination of things. You will need to figure out if the slowness is due to connection/download speed issues (either with your computer or their server) or slow parse/page generation times, due to bad code, slow MySQL server, or a myriad of other causes. Avec Posted March 25, 2006 Posted March 25, 2006 The first thing I noticed was that you have category counts turned on. This will slow the site considerably, especially with larger numbers of products, which it looks like you have. The second thing I see is the 'Image Not Available' are on the big side, particularly since it just a place holder. Third, the file osCommerce.gif (the books in the upper corners are pretty large as well. To check the page speed, use a Web Page Analyzer. Once you have made those changes, it will load quicker. After that, look at page optimization threads. The one mentioned by kgt is one of the best.
cricex Posted March 25, 2006 Posted March 25, 2006 I'm having the exact same issue.. I disabled category count which solved the problem on the store.. but the in the administration adding/vewing/editing categories/products takes a uper long time to load.. i have some 12,000 products in my database.. is oscommerce just not made to handle larger stores?

There are people running stores with more than a quarter million items. There are guides to optimization in the Tips & Tricks forum but nothing will make up for a slow or inefficient server. Don't blame the code first, look into your environment. Wendy James Posted March 25, 2006 Posted March 25, 2006 Page loaded really fast for me even with the category counts. If you do not have images for your products why not remove the place holders? That would help some, but honestly even going into your largest category the page loaded super fast. Maybe it is just your connection. Wendy James Creativity is allowing yourself to make mistakes. iainsanderson Posted March 25, 2006 Author Posted March 25, 2006 Thank you to all.... Avec thank you for the excellent lnk to a web page analyser. The problem I think has gone. I have had to take everything off my remote server, reload a fresh new osc store. Everything is running fine now. It was definetly not my connection I know that and the hosting company kept telling me that they were running fine. Maybe it code have been some of the code, but as I have only just started I hadn't changed anything apart from adding easy populate 2.62 Any way thanks again. Iain
