no checkout!!

can anyone help,

my website is in the complete starter stages and I am slowly chugging through trying to change different thing and messing most things up in the process.

I have put a tester product on the website, and you can sign in and add it to your cart, but you cannot go any further through checkout.

Also everything is appearing in dollars when I need it in pounds. I have set pounds as the default currency, but this does not help and i have tried removing the dollar currency but then nothing appears.

Could some one tell me in very plain terms where to go and what to do
