ups AND usps not working after years?

I've tried a million things after reading the forums but can't get these to work anymore--I've had my site working forever--at least a year or more with no shipping problems and both of those shipping methods stopped working with the error:

 

Warning: fsockopen(): unable to connect to production.shippingapis.com:80 in /home/bean1228/public_html/osCommerce/includes/classes/http_client.php on line 330

 

and

I've had this working as I said, so I have the production server on the usps site and the password, and same with ups (was working). Probably stopped working at first of new year but I couldnt find a solution, or fix it, so I am doing a table rate for now. But I started using osCOmmerce for the shipping modules, so I am frustrated beyond compare. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am about to give up!

If you are on IPowerweb, then that may be the problem. I've seen lots of complaints like this in the past.

 

They may be blocking that outgoing IP in their firewall.

 

In any event contact your ISP and let them know the problem.

Thanks for responding! Not IPowerweb but I have sent my web host company an email to see if they had changed anything.

I tried to ping production.shippingapis.com and got no response...

This is the USPS service...you need to contact them for the API interface. if you do a URL to www.shippingapis.com it will redirect to

USPS...

What I would do is obtain their current API code and look to see if

production.shippingapis.com is still a valid portal...you see you are going in a out mode to USPS front end server.

Shipping shipping...problems problems...I know that whenever you go

outside of your relm to another computer network you are going to

have a certain level of problems...This has allways been a problem way

before the internet just ask any mainframe programmer envolved with

ftp to another system allways a connect/handshake problem...This

same situations has not vanished when the internet came about still

a connect/handshake problems (invalid socket)...so since the shipping

is a very important function in sell items on the internet...why not try

first to avoid using an API to interface to UPS,USPS and so on...

Why not set up and maintain your own shipping rate table in your web

system...It may take a little time to build the table but you will find that

their are similiar cost for shipping from one state to another...than you

would not have to worry about weither about missing an order.

Just my thoughts

They recently stopped using passwords so now in the pw field you have to put your user name. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the suggestion and sorry for the delay--I was called out of town for business and didn't have a chance to get online!

 

Unfortunately, the username in the pw field didn't work. Also, the shipping for ups stopped working as well, so it must be something to do with my webhost, maybe. I will call them tomorrow. I was also going to check the docs (from usps and ups)and see if something changed that I didn't catch. I know I am not the only one with this issue. I just can't believe there is no answer after all this time, and all the posts I have seen about this. I will keep trying and figure something out. Hopefully.
