Guest Posted March 22, 2006 Posted March 22, 2006 I am trying to configure my new store .I am stuck on the tax zones and tax setup in general. Does anyone know how I can get this working properly for the crazy canadian tax system Thank you
Guest Posted March 22, 2006 Posted March 22, 2006 i offered this to somebody the other night and it seemed to solve their problems. tutorial on how to setup canadian taxes (ontario used as example): BACKUP YOUR DATABASE (if you end up having a problem due to these instructions, you can always roll-back and not lose any data!) - UNINSTALL all tax modules / setups you currently have (this is from my own install, which currently works properly) in your admin panel: 1. Locations/Taxes -> Zones ....ensure you have the following entries (you may have to dig for em if they're there). if you can't find them - ADD them: Canada Alberta AB Canada British Columbia BC Canada Manitoba MB Canada New Brunswick NB Canada Newfoundland NF Canada Northwest Territories NT Canada Nova Scotia NS Canada Nunavut NU Canada Ontario ON Canada Prince Edward Island PE Canada Quebec QC Canada Saskatchewan SK Canada Yukon Territory YT 2. Locations/Taxes -> Tax Zones add: Canada GST Ontario (or your province) PST ... once these two entires are created: 3. Edit Canada GST add Description: GST 4. Edit Ontario PST add Description: PST (only when shipping to Ontario (or whatever your province is)) 5. Locations / Taxes -> create a class called "GST" 6. edit your new class: Tax Class Title: GST Description: GST 7. Locations / Taxes -> Tax Rates add the following tax rates (if they're not already there): Tax Class Title: GST Zone: Canada GST Tax Rate (%): 7.0000 Description: 7.0% GST Priority: 1 Tax Class Title: GST Zone: Canada GST Tax Rate (%): 8.0000 Description: 8.0% PST Priority: 1 then try to buy again and see if it calculates correctly.
Guest Posted March 22, 2006 Posted March 22, 2006 Thank you , I am in New brunswick, would this still work for me .?
Guest Posted March 22, 2006 Posted March 22, 2006 yes, just substitute the Ontario-edits & ontario's charges for new brunswick :)
Guest Posted April 18, 2006 Posted April 18, 2006 Forgive me, but what exactly do you mean by "- UNINSTALL all tax modules / setups you currently have" ? How and where do you do this? :) Shanny
Guest Posted April 21, 2006 Posted April 21, 2006 Hi there. I'm new to all this (as of yesterday when I installed osCommerce for the first time) and did a search in this forum for the Canadian taxes. Your setup below was great and works - THANK YOU! However, I need the PST to only come up for Ontario residents only and not for international orders. Do you know if this is possible? The GST stays for all order regardless of origin so that's not an issue. Thanks much for your help! Guest Posted April 21, 2006 Posted April 21, 2006 Never mind - I kept searching on this forum and found an answer that works. Thanks to GLITTERBUG! For those of you still following this thread and still scratching your heads, here's what Glitterbug said to help me anyway: From the front screen, under Locations / Taxes, click on Tax Zones. Click Insert. Under Zone Name, write "New York." Under Description, write "New York Local Sales Tax Zone." Click on Details. Click on Insert. Under Country, select United States. Under Zone, select New York. Now go to Tax Rates. Click on New Tax Rate. Under Tax Class Title, select Taxable Goods. Under Zone, select New York. Under Tax Rate (%), enter your local sales tax. You can write whatever you want under description. This should work for you. THANKS SO MUCH TO THE CONTRIBUTORS!!!!!! Hi there. cy Posted April 30, 2006 Posted April 30, 2006 Sorry bit3010, I am on the same boat as you were, but i don't quite understand the example of New York. According to this: http://www.aacb.com/tools/taxtable.asp , each province will get taxed differently, how do I set it up this way? THanks for any help in advance, Chris
ddp Posted April 30, 2006 Posted April 30, 2006 Hi all, For Canadian Taxes I had a simpler solution. Create one tax zone for All of canada and assign the gst to that zone. Create one tax zone for Ontario (or whaterver province you are in) and assign pst (if applicable ) to that zone. Create one tax zone with every other country for the rest of your sales (no tax). A somewhat tedious step. There is one thing not mentioned at all in this thread and that is the tax on shipping. It might be different in other provinces but in ontario shipping is only subject to the GST. So I created a seperate tax class called shipping tax and applied that to the tax zone of Canada. Backup before making changes. Backup before making changes! Backup before making changes!! You did do a backup? eh?
cy Posted April 30, 2006 Posted April 30, 2006 Hi ddp, Would it be too much trouble to create a step by step? I am having a very hard time with these taxes? ANd what is the theory behind this? What is the tax charged on determined by? Shipping or billing address? Thanks in advance!! Chris
