ksl8313 Posted March 15, 2006 Posted March 15, 2006 Hello: I've had a store running osCommerce for about a year, and I'm trying to give it a new look, along with some fresh mods added. vovofashion.com It is a wholesale women's clothing website. Please take a look at it and let me get some suggestions. 1. color scheme - It used to have burgundy and khaki color scheme, but I'm trying to change it up a bit, along with a new banner, etc. Give me some advices on the color scheme, please, since I'm totally out of ideas. 2. I still need to add: SSL mod, member approval mod. Is there anything that you guys think would enhance my website greatly? Please give me some feedback, thank you!
HSMagic Posted March 16, 2006 Posted March 16, 2006 I'm only able to view the login screen, it looks ok, not unpleasant to look at. Pretty much I get this: Warning: session_start(): The session id contains invalid characters, valid characters are only a-z, A-Z and 0-9 in /home/vovofash/public_html/commerce/includes/functions/sessions.php on line 67 and the "security information" warning with every click. Your address in the address bar looks like this: https://host277.ipowerweb.com/~vovofash/commerce/ Which sort of looks "cheap"... I would look in to having your domain appear.. perhaps a host issue?
ksl8313 Posted March 21, 2006 Author Posted March 21, 2006 the address changed once I added "forcing the customer to log in to view catalog" mod. Thanks! Anyone else? Please? ksl8313 Posted April 3, 2006 Author Posted April 3, 2006 I've been trying to figure out this error, it has something to do with forcing the customer to login. Basically, if you log in these errors won't show up. Also, if you are clicking the buttons to the left (rather than the top) these errors won't show up, whether you are logged in or not. But all of the session id checking is done in application_top.php, so I can't figure out why some pages would give the error and some pages would not. Please give me an idea, thanks!
rankandfile Posted April 3, 2006 Posted April 3, 2006 Aside from the errors, I have the following opinions: 1. I don't mind the burgundy/khaki colors, you may just want to utilize them differently. For example, there is too much burgundy on the right side. Consider changing the color of the burgundy column that has the print, and maybe change the print itself. Useful content (ads, specials, etc.) might work here as well. You may also want to add some sort of print to the khaki buttons on the left or top. 2. I am getting conflicting impressions from the text. On the left side you have the elegant cursive text, while at the top and bottom you have a canned text that looks like it was never modified. The cursive text appears rather light, and the flash buttons at the top are interesting, but may look better if they aren't as "flashy" and are modified to fit the rest of website's "elegant/fashion" type of look. You might also consider adding a raised or imprinted look to your text. 3. I personally don't like having your home page essentially be a sign-in sheet. It's like going to a fashion store in a mall or on Rodeo Drive in LA and the first thing that you see are not the clothing or fresh new fabrics, but a militant store attendant demanding you sign in before you get through the door. A little exhaggeration there, but you get the point. I would put some of your latest/snazziest/featured/whatever products on the home page. This is why stores have mannequins in the front windows. They get the attention of shoppers and invite them into the store. Then again, I am sure you have valid reasons for creating this type of home page. I hope this helps!
ksl8313 Posted April 3, 2006 Author Posted April 3, 2006 rankandfile, thank you for your suggestions. 1. That was exactly what I was looking for! =) some advices along lines of that. 2. I might end up throwing the buttons at the top out entirely, but thank you! 3. It is a wholesale website, and I would need the sign-in because I would only sell to those with a valid business license. I would consider putting some merchandise preview, but it would promote design copies for other merchandisers. Give me more design advices, and also give me ideas on where to find the solution for these errors. it has something to do with forcing the customer to login.Basically, if you log in these errors won't show up. Guest Posted April 3, 2006 Posted April 3, 2006 It doesn't let me view any products without loggin in... No one is going to buy anything from this site if you don't fix it. I don't even know what you sell. I go to the site and it says welcome, please sign in. All I can get is that window and the same error that others have mentioned. If I was a customer I would last 5 seconds on the site before I left. The layout looks good but the technical side of site needs a lot of work.

The error, as mentioned above, I'm trying to fix desperately, but to no avail. The login has to be as it is, because, for the reasons mentioned above. I already have a lot of customers and they will come in regardless (it will save them hassle of making a trip.) Thanks for your advice!
Guest Posted April 4, 2006 Posted April 4, 2006 Why doesn't it say anywhere on the site that it is a wholesale website and customers need a valid business license? Let me guess I have to create an account to view that part.
Guest Posted April 4, 2006 Posted April 4, 2006 I really don't see any point in forcing the customer to login but then not forcing any restrictions on the login account. I made an account with a made up everything, business license and email were completly invalid. I was not only able to login but I was able to place a COD order and have it shipped to a made up city in Afganistan for the same shipping price you have for USA customers. At least make them activate via email before they can login. Also remove those oddball countrys that you would never ship to or adjust the shipping costs accordingly. As for the valid business license if you can't run it threw some validation database at least force the field to only accept entrys in a valid business license format. I could put anything in there from 1 digit to whatever and it would fly.
ksl8313 Posted April 5, 2006 Author Posted April 5, 2006 Brian, thanks for your feedback. as for your comments, I will be adding member approval mod, to take care of the problem. I also need to add some kind of comment, I guess. I will do so. Anyone with any idea why it's causing such errors? Please advise, thank you!

I already have a lot of customers and they will come in regardless (it will save them hassle of making a trip.) Thanks for your advice! i don't think anyone can help you fix the problem because the top menu is built in flash which means the link URLs are embedded in the buttons, without knowing what URLs you have linked i won't be able to help figure out what is causing it. my guess is that you have the links wrong. for example, it looks as if the 'who we are' button is linked to: https://host277.ipowerweb.com/~vovofash/com...are.php?osCsid= it should just be: http://host277.ipowerweb.com/~vovofash/com.../who_we_are.php change https to http (those pages don't need to have https) and take off the "?osCsid=" when i click on that first link i listed i get the error messages, when i click on the second link i listed it works as it should. just out of curiosity, why does someone have to log in to read the 'who we are', 'contact us' (etc, etc) pages?

Just went into your shop, the front page looks great, maybe it would be better if we didnt have to sign up to get into your store. just my oppinion...new to this myself. sandy
rankandfile Posted April 9, 2006 Posted April 9, 2006 Good feedback by Brian! Maybe you could make the login feature activate when viewers want to see your actual products. In this way casual viewers (or potential customers) can get a chance to learn about your company; but if they want to see the goods they have to supply a username/password.
ksl8313 Posted April 12, 2006 Author Posted April 12, 2006 hey guys, thanks for your comments. i will get to working on the URL link in the flash. outside of that, as for the problem with forcing the login, I handled it in the application_top.php, and and am not sure how to fix it as to work with some and not with other pages. well I guess I can figure it out tho. Thanks everyone!
