Ahhh -- just finished my first website using OSC and would like any advice that you can offer a newcomer like myself. Here is my link UrbanWristWearUrbanWristWear.com

One thing that I know I need to fix is in the header of the index page. There is a bunch of white space next to my logo and for the life of me I can't find where to change this in the code. Anybody know? It is only in the index so I imagine it is in the index.php? file.

Here are the contributions I have used:

SEO

Center Shop

Thanks

It's in includes/header.php.

It's not that though, just align your logo centrally and then fix the frame width. On 800x600 and 1024x768, your shop is disappearing off the right hand side of the page.

- Your header is too big, it takes half my monitor.

- Get rid of the "Welcome Guest! Would you" thingy.

- It looks pretty much like a osc-stock site. Use a template and your site would like much more professional, which is very important as you sell high-cost items.

- I don't need to no my IP address

-

We only sell 100% brand new and authentic watches. Each comes in original packaging with warrany.
What's a warrany? :P

1-You do not have SSL.

2-Your site seems to be width limited but is still far too wide at 800 x 600 and even at 1024 x 768 resolutions. It requires left to right scrolling at both resolutions, something you want to avoid.

3-Your shipping and returns policies are not stated (probably working on them I would assume).

4-Your privacy notice is not stated (probably working on it as well I would assume).

5-The FAQ link points to the conditions of use page, need to update it all to match.

6-"Our Prices are so low - We cannott Advertise Them" - some capitalized, some not. Either capitalize all words or just the first.

7-"We only sell 100% brand new and authentic watches. Each comes in original packaging with warrany." - Warranty is misspelled.

Just a few things I noticed, all my opinion. Hope it helps.

Stylesheet.css is something you should become familiar with.

The stock oscommerce grey is not the only colour [uSA: color] available.

Instead of showing the users IP address, just add the phrase

Your IP has been logged

Also on the same item

I would change the following:-

For you protection, We Prosecute Fraudulent Charges!

to

For your protection, we will prosecute all fraudulent transactions.

Also to align and centre the page you could add the following line at the top of your header.php file

<TABLE WIDTH="780" HEIGHT="100%" CELLPADDING="0" CELLSPACING="0" ALIGN="CENTER" BORDERCOLOR="#000000" BORDER="1">

<TR>

<TD WIDTH="780" HEIGHT="100%" ALIGN="CENTER">

then add the following to the end of your footer.php file (this should be placed on the line before the </BODY> tag):-

</TD>

</TR>

</TABLE>

The above should align your site to the centre of the page and also restrict the width to 780 pixels wide, increase this if you wish to break away from the 800x600 rule, but it is advisable to keep the screen area to a resolution of 800x600 as a lot of people are still using desktop reslotions of that size.

Well, what is meant by "For your protection, we will prosecute all fraudulent charges/transactions' anyway?? that doesn't make sense if you think about it...

Most people won't have a clue what this means:

"Your IP has been logged" and then it sound pretty offensive.

and how does this "we will prosecute all fraudulent transactions" result in this "For you protection" ?

maybe you should say:

"For OUR protection, We Prosecute Fraudulent Charges!

but then again, maybe better say nothing.

I really like the Calibre 8700- I was looking at it in a shop the other day. You have an awesome price on it too- Here in Atlanta its $400.

The problem is I would never put my credit card number in on your site, or even dream of buying from you. This is why:

1. I get 12 spam mails a day from "online watch stores" trying to sell me a Rolex watch for $35.00.

I understand that you are a factory authorized retailer for citizen watches, but you have to understand that buying name brand watches online is an inherently shady industry from all the bad apples out there.

2. Those shady knock-off watch sites look like crap. Guess what? Yours does too.

Sorry bro, but it does. I understand your margins are lower than some name brand jewelry store in the mall, but if you can't improve the look of your site, you need to invest in getting a graphic designer to help you. You must work hard to seperate yourself from the fly-by-night knock-off watch vendors, and the only thing the customer has to go on is the quality of your website.

Furthermore, your website smacks of amature. Go to your favorite online retailers and tell me how many tell you your IP address, that they will come after you if you defraud them, how many display a Paypal logo, how many tell you the current date, how many have jagged grainy images.

Yeah, none of them.

3. You are trying to sell me a $220.00 luxury item with 1 photograph.

Watches are all about how they look. Sure, some have neato technology, but most people are going to buy them for how good they look. I know when I am picking up women at the club I'm not going to woo them with the fact that my watch never needs winding because it has high-tech built in solar panels- I'm going to woo them with the fact that my watch is expensive looking and the perception that I'm filthy rich, or at least not poor. (sorry ladies, I know thats a bit sexest but I'm trying to make a point here)

I would start with an overall face view, an angled view of the watch and band, and a close up view of the dial so I can see the intricate details.

My advice comes in two flavors- Pick the one that won't offend you.

In my opinion, I think you were very excited to get your shop up and running. Therefore you may have hurried through some of the important points mentioned in this thread. It is true that your store has a template osc feel and you can change that by taking the advice here and get familiar with your stylesheet. Before you do, you should have some what of an idea of how you want your store to stand out.

I have seen a lot of stores posted and don't worry, yours is not the worst. It actually is along the same lines as most that i've seen posted here. But that's becasue it's mainly progrtammers that can't design if their life depended on it. So try to take some advice from this thread but by all means, don't take it too seriously.

It is important that you spend more time on your design and think about how you want to present items to your customers. Some cheapy sites do very well becasue the audience is not expecting much. But when you try and sell watches for a couple hunderd, take a look at other sites that are doing the same and make yours better or just as good.

You should also spend time spell checking and proofing your text along with some basic alignments issues.

That's my 2 cents.

the sites i've built are

www.alopro.com

www.michalskagan.com

www.expresscomputerprod.com

www.revgear.com

www.mysampleshop.com (not live just sample to show clients)

Feel free to point out all of my mistakes, it helps me learn while you spend time teaching me.

What would you do if you knew you could not fail?

Thanks alot for everybodys input and I am definately going to take alot of the advice to heart and try to give my site more of a professional look. Its hard - because for me the coding is the easy part but trying to establish a look or a style seems freakin' impossible. I am going to work my "you know what" off to my site up and running this weekend. I just want a presense ASAP- and I know it is going to be a work in progress for a long time. Any suggestions on my logo. I know I need to change it becuase the resolution sucks. What is an ideal size for a logo? I looked at some of my competitor websites and I wasn't impressed at all with alot of there designs. www.bluenile.com - is it just me? Anybody out there want to take on a project this weekend to help make my site sell watches??? email me with your price and what you can do for me... [email protected].

Thanks
