Navigation bar using html template - is this OK/best way?

Hi,

I am using the STS Plus template systme but presume it's the same principles behind the normal STS.

Anyway,

I want to put a navigation bar horizontally across the top of the page, with links 'home' 'contact us' buttons etc etc. I have played around with dreamweaver and added a navigation bar with roll over images to the html template, this seems to work fine.

Can anyone recommend doing this or not doing it (maybe I should be using $url placeholders I?ve read about).

Are there any foreseeable problems using the html code (dreamweaver method) to do this?

Oh and I read in the manual that I should be using ultimate url's rather than relative ones. I am running with a local install at the moment and the navigation bar only seems to work when i use relative url's. This will mean i don't have to change all the links when i upload as well - is this a problem and should i definitely be using full url's?

Will the way i've done it in dreamweaver effect the running of the shopping cart etc?

Thank you for your advice.
