Guest Posted March 13, 2006 Posted March 13, 2006 I have a website that I'm happy with, completely finished. The only thing I've never really liked is the paypal shopping cart, ONLY because of the limited shipping charges it provides (I can't calculate based on weight). Is there a way I can use OSCommerce only for the shopping cart to create "add to cart" buttons, and the checkout process? If anyone is familiar with paypals shopping cart, I'm basically looking for the EXACT same thing, except I need to be able to assign products weights and weighted shipping costs upon checkout. Any help appreciated, thanx!
signs Posted March 14, 2006 Posted March 14, 2006 osCommerce is a php based program with all of it's parts being integrated with each other. I don't think it's possible to pick and choose which elements you like and then incorporate them into any html based pages. I used to use the paypal buttons/cart, too and changed to osCommerce for the same reason you mentioned. It has taken me quite a while, but I have managed, through learning bits and pieces about how all the parts of the osc cart work in harmony, to personalize my shopping cart and end up with the "look" I wanted. The functionality of the cart goes way beyond anything Paypal has to offer, and once you have learned to manipulate the style sheet and incorporate your own buttons/headers, etc., you will never want to go back. There are lots of great articles in the knowledge base to get you started, like the Stylesheet Definitions for instance. Plus, reading the Documentation will also give you tons of info and insight. It is possible to create a cart that has the same look and feel as your current html pages. But as far as only using bits and pieces of oscommerce, I think it's more of an "all or nothing" thing. good luck, Jeri
Guest Posted March 14, 2006 Posted March 14, 2006 Bummer, do you know of any other shopping cart that allows what I'm looking for? I just don't have the time or patience to completely rebuild my entire site unfortunately.
signs Posted March 14, 2006 Posted March 14, 2006 I was in the same boat as you are when I had my site just the way I wanted it but for the limitations of the paypal cart. I searched and searched but found nothing that was like paypal AND had the weight based shipping. I gave up looking. I don't know why Paypal won't let you set up your shipping that way. The only temporary solution I found was to use individual paypal buttons and then calculate shipping to the farthest zip code from me at USPS.com and UPS.com and use the max amount as the flat rate for that item. I don't recall if paypal's cart lets you use flat rate per item or not, but that was the only solution I found -- using the individual item buttons. For what it's worth, I saw a dramatic increase in sales after changing from Paypal buttons to a shopping cart. It's more interactive and gives a more professional appearance which instills more trust in the buyer so they are comfortable buying from you online. After switching to osCommerce I began getting more and more orders from folks outside of the ebay arena. Ebay is where I got my start, but now that I have the oscommerce cart I no longer sell on ebay at all and make a nice living just off the website. So I guess the answer is: it's either stick with the Paypal cart and try to get creative to find solutions to your shipping dilemma, or make the jump to a full blown cart. I haven't seen anything in between. best of luck Jeri
andrew40 Posted March 14, 2006 Posted March 14, 2006 Try RomanCart, i think that will give you what you want, but you would do better to use OSC..
