New server, Updating osC, moving Database

I'm moving to a new server, installed osC v2.2ms2-9 through Plesk. So far so good. :)

My old cart was from a version waaay before the milestones. I dumped the db with structure to an .sql file. Can I use the db from this old version? My understanding from other posts that there are some structural differences, so I'm afraid I'll need to do some changes...

What would be your suggestion on how to use all the data to repopulate the new cart? I'd hate to manually input hundreds of products...

I'd appreciate all input.

Cheers,

Susan

Since you don't give your version, no one can say for sure.

The defaul.php shows v 1.76 2002/06/24

That's the file version, not project version. Though since you've got a default.php, it certainly is old. I personally know of a site that's probably running the same or nearly the same version as this, though I don't have access to it right now, and can't get the database structure or the code.

You didn't answer my second question: are you just trying to move your products? If so, then the easy populate contribution will help you migrate between the db versions.

Well, the cart was installed in around 2002...

But regarding the db, I was hoping to move all customer and order information besides the products. All other stuff I can manage without, or to input manually. But in case it's a big hassle, I can live without them. Most important is to move the products. There is nothing fancy, just categories, subcategories, product description, price, and image.

Cheers,

Susan

If you're just needing to move products and categories, you can create a csv dump of your old database, then use easy populate to import the products to your new database.

ok,

I'm checking the Easy Populate, but right at the beginning I'm missing some stuff, like the

/catalog/temp also the

/catalog/includes/boxes/catalog.php

and looks like the colums named differently, so I'm not sure this would work. :(

Any other ideas?

Cheers,

Susan

You would need to dump the data from your existing database to a comma delimited or tab delimited file, which you can open with MS Excel or another spreadsheet program. You would then need to change column names and reorder them and add blank columns where applicable to make the format match the new table, or you need to adjust it to work with Easy Populate. From there, you upload into your new database.

Database migration (even between versions of the same software) can be very complicated and there are people who do this sort of thing for a living. There are tools available to help, but in this case, you'll probably be done quicker by dumping your existing data to text files, adding/removing/renaming columns in Excel where appropriate, and uploading the new file to the new database.
