I have a question regarding the google sitemap cron command:

When I test it, I get this:

For your convenience here is the CRON command for your site:

php /home3/virtual99/site6124/fst/var214/www/html/catalog/googlesitemap/index.php.

I had my server run it and they said they received a similar confimation screen. I logged into google and I had a sitemap which I manually uploaded 5 hours ago and it's still there. Is the cron command supposed to overwrite it? Or does it just keep it updated for when google "checks" the sitemap? If you could clarify it, it would be a big help.

Thanks!

The cron command is entered in your control panel and runs a script that automatically updates the sitemaps. How often it gets updated depends upon how you set up the cron command.

Hi Jack,

I have the cron command scheduled to run daily. I sumbitted the sitemap manually to google about 17 hours ago, and the cron job was run about 5 hours ago. When I log into google, I see that the sitemap index was submitted 17 hours ago and google last downloaded it 5 hours ago. I guess the part I am confused on is do I have to keep submitting it to Google or does the cron just update the sitemap daily so when google decides to "fetch" it, it is up to date. So, if I am correct, the cron job keeps the sitemap updated for when google wants to download it from my site. If this is the case, I would never have to resubmit the site map, just keep it updated, which the cron job would do for me.

Thanks for your help!

yes, that is correct. Once it is running, you do not need to do anything else. The maps will be kept up-to-date.

Thanks for the clarification Jack!
