Move information from column to main body

Hello all.

I've been given a monumental task, to do some customization with OS commerce, with which I have absolutely no experience whatsoever.

Here's what I need to do:

 

On the right hand column, the first box is categories. I need categories to go to the main body of the site, and what is there (New products for "blank month") to move in it's place in the right column. I've tried looking up tutorials and I've searched this forum for three hours, with no results. I'm sure it's out there somewhere but I am at a loss as to where.

I've tried some things, and I managed to get the categories box gone all together from the right column, but when I try to copy and paste the "categories" code from column_right.php into index.php, the categories header box and links to our products show up at the very top of the website, as if in a header. Is index.php a header? I also deleted it out of column_right, and was sucessful in that respect. After changing so much with strange results I just reset with our original codes, and am back to square one.

Can anyone have enough patience to walk through this with me? I appreciate it!!
