.htaccess files and frontpage

Hello Everyone!

I'm trying to password protect my admin file on my webpage. However the process to modify the .htaccess files went completely over my head (Why is it so damn hard?). So instead I decided to use frontpage extensions provided by my server. Initially this worked, but then stopped shortly after. I either want to use the osCommerce .htaccess files, or go with my servers frontpage protecion, so I'd like to know either:

1) If I use frontpage extensions on my store, will I have to delete every single .htaccess file on my site, or just the ones in the subfolder I want to protect (admin)? If so, do I have to delete every .htaccess file in the subfolders of admin too? Also, do these .htaccess files control the chmod setting of the files? So, if I deleted them all, I'd have to protect all my images, includes, and whatever folders using the frontpage extensions too?

2) How do I password protect a folder using the provided .htaccess files? I read the documentation on the subject, but was unfortunately too much for me to understand. Isn't there an easy way? I imagine this would cause many people headaches...

Which of these would be the better option to go with? Thanks in advance,

-Geoff
