Pulling hair out trying to have product attributes as images

Really, really need some help. Have tried this discussion before, but no one answered, think I may have put it in the wrong area, so going to try again before I have a nervous breakdown....

 

The best HCI solution I can get from an online catalog site i am hoping to create, is by having colours/patterns within the product attributes of a given product. To be able to do this I really want to have these colours and patterns displayed as images in the drop down list of product attributes of a product.

 

I have searched high and low (even spent about 5 hours searching Google), and have spent hours trying to re-code this contribution given:

But I just cannot get it to work, does anyone have any clue of how to get this to work?????
