Duplicate / Lost Orders

I am having a problem with orders getting lost somewhere in the system. In a few cases, I have had 2 customers make orders and receive a confirmation mail, but they are both given the same order number in the mail, and only 1 of the customers orders shows up in the oscommerce orders.


Both customers have their payments completed, so at least that is getting saved by our payment processor, but it seems weird to me that one order is just "lost", and it's a pain to have to manually process the orders and emails, and double check everything to make sure an order is not lost.


Anyone have any ideas why this is happening? I noticed that ZenCart (which is closely related) has issues where the order number is guessed at and not saved before going to payment, so orders made close together in time can get mixed up. Does OSCommerce suffer this problem - it seems like a pretty major issue for any high volume sites. I am still waiting to hear back from our payment processor to get the exact times the payments were made to investigate this.


If anyone has experienced the same problems and has any solutions it would be much appreciated. Thanks ahead of time.
