How to list categories on homepage?

My store currently doesn't show product categories on the home page. Can it be configured to do so?

 

I want it like this:

 

- left column infoboxes

- top middle greeting intact

- then start displaying categories directly below greeting...in place of the "New Products for February" box.

- right column is turned off (and will stay that way)

 

Seems simple enough, but I don't know where to look.
