invisible button on product listing pages

I've followed several posts on adding a "more info" button above my "add to cart" button. I thought the changes I made to my product_listing.php file weren't working, but on further investigating it appears as though the buttons are simple invisible.

If you hover just below the "add to cart" button, the hand selection pops up. When you click, it takes you to the product info page....which is what I want.

 

Odd! So the action works...why isn't the button showing up?

 

I've added the .gif button to the appropriate languages folder and added a definition for it in english.php file.

 

Please help.
