Reynauld Posted February 27, 2006 Posted February 27, 2006 Dear Group: I really like the open source concept which give me an alternate choice besides Microsoft products. My question is how does one go about starting a website with OScommerce? Do I need my own server or does OSComm also hosts websites? I noticed when I viewed all the on-line stores that every URL sarts with OScommerce than the number of the store. If I wanted my own URL address can I purchase the OScomm software or does every URL have to start with OScommerce? Sorry but I am pretty new to all this and I apologize if my amature questions. Thanks Rey
Guest Posted February 27, 2006 Posted February 27, 2006 You need your own server space, most people just purchase a small part of a server from a hosting company. Google will find you lots of choices. Find one you like and go from there. Most also have an automatic install from the control panel you will get with your hosting plan but there was an update in Dec (I think) that is at the top of the main forum page, use that version as it will save a lot of headaches in the future. You will also need a domain name that you can register at any number of places, google once again will help you there or your new host can do it for you. You can also install something like easyphp and run it off your desktop until you are ready to put it up on the internet, if you need to save a few bucks. osC stores have their own domain names, it is just when viewing in the live stores that it looks that way.
