Add comment field to a product?

Several of my products can be personlized. How do I give the customer the ability to fill in their "name" for a certain product. The only idea I have come up with is to have them place this information in the comment box at check out...however, this looks quite choppy to me and who is to say that the customer will remember once they get to check out. Please advise!

I am still very much new and learning the ropes...after seeing the last few posts...I want to find out if there is anything I need to do to my information in order to ensure that I don't ever loose it. Once I place it all on my admin it it there correct? or do I have to manually back anything up?

I just installed this contribution the other day. Works great and was pretty easy to add to my store. Needed a text field for customers to fill in greeting card messages along with the person's first & last name. Check it out see if it will work for you.

Always back up your store and all files. I do a complete backup of my files etc via ftp couple times a week. Also do backups of your database regularly too. Once you up it all to your server yeah it's there but what happens if the server goes down? Always have a backup on hand for an emergency. Also backup your files b4 you make any changes.

Mindy,

Thank you so VERY much for the tip on the backups...I did it just now! I really appreciate it.

I checked out the contribution...it is JUST what I need. However, I am sooo new at this that I didn't even understand the first step.

"STEP 1. Add new fields to db

Add the following fields to table products_options

You can either use the enclosed option_type_feature.sql or the following definitions"

Where do I find this?

Plus...a little further in the installation...how do I know if I am using a "clean osc-MS1 installation"?

...so sorry for the stupidity. Any help is GREATLY appreciated.
