by any chance dose anyone know the best way to submite a site to google?

I did a search by my domain name and there is only one page index

at the end of the day the code will be good

Posted

install and run http://www.oscommerce.com/community/contri...arch,google+xml - google will come soon enough, and you should get a very good crawl. Providing your site is good enough, and that your other seo work is good (i.e. you do have lots of other site slinking to you..?), the big G will index you relatively quickly. May be worth doing a search online for "Google sandbox" to get a better idea of what happens to new sites though

cool thanks.

well the site I'm doing with OSC is site:artofthetime.com

But any ways I guess that my question should be. What's the best way to optimize an OSC SITE?

That link is a little misleading.. it shows 5, but that because of the %. Correctly done you have 132 for site:artofthetime.com -

Site optomizing is based largely on assumptions of what work. No one really knows for sure since Google is not going to tell anyone. Some say meta tags, while others enjoy high ranking in google with no meta tags. Don't get me wrong, I am sure that meta tags help to a point...

All the rules come down to one vital point - the end user.

I'll explain.

You want meta tags, alt tags, decriptive titles and <h1>Headers</h1> and <h2>Headers</h2>, you want each to understand links that read in human form, you want a lot of information on your site, worthy information... why

Because all of these things make it easy for a normal everyday, non-techincal surfer to use your site and find it beneficial.

Google will rank you site high and more often if you are deemed as something people want, designed for people to use, easilsy and effectively.

However Google will not tell you how they determine that, otherwise everyone would be at number 1.

That's why inbound links are so important... it's not the link itself, more that google may feel that with SOOO many people linking a certain site that there must be something of quality there that everyone wants.

Key word is Quality, not quantity. Apple iTunes has an average google PR of 8 to 10 (10 being the best). If I could get Apple to link to my website, it would be better than having 5 links from people with no or low PR's (1's and 2's)

Since switching to OsCommerce my page ranking started over, though my previous site had a PR of 5 in about a month, which is good for small business.

There really is no science to it, in part it's guesstimation and luck, though hard work can make it happen to.

I using Google Sitemap, Google Base Feeds, Froogle Feeds, Google AdWords, Yahoo Overture, off site links, minimal out going links. I'm nearly doubling my daily sales each month.

Bottom line - make the site for the people, not the flashiness. Make it easy to use and put things there that people want - if you do that, Google will come.

might want to start to stop giving spiders sessions

Can spider sessions hurt a web site?

I'm a victim of circumstance

yes, it causes "duplicate pages" to the bots

I've never done much in the way of optimising my websites for search engines, other than adding a meta tags contribution. But I still get very good rankings.

I concentrate on making my website a good website, that my customers will want to come back to and which they will recommend to their friends. If more customers keep coming, then Google will spread the word further.

Add as much good quality text as you can, such as articles and product descriptions.

The big problem that I have with search engine optimisation is that its a constantly changing target. You might make a change which gets you to the top of the rankings, but then they change the rules and you go down.

Having a good quality website will mean you're always near the top.

Submit a Froogle feed. I have 100% of my product information pages spidered.

You wanted some suggestions :blink: :( <_< :-"

I know a lot of people are against force cookies and all, but I force cookies, stop all spider sessions and I recreate sessions.

I had some tag contrib's working prior but have had difficulties with them, so they haven?t been working for the past 30 days. (Almost since the entire life of my OSC site).

My prior page rank on google varied from a 4 to a 5 with my previous perl shopping cart, with approximately 400 entries in Google.

After installing OSC my page rank went to 0 and my total index was 7 pages index, contact us, shipping pages etc... Not what I wanted to see after all the hard work I put into my new cart.

In order to retain as much as I could I set up perm redirects in my .htaccess file, which both helped and hindered me. Google would take the new information so that it knew where to look in the future (this was the good), but it would also drop the old pages making my Google entries even less (this was the bad).

BUT - My store has been online for almost exactly 30 days. My first order came in around my initial opening which was placed on 02/25/2006. To date we have 63 orders, average two a day with approximate monthly sales averaging $6000.00 and 600+ visitors a day. The visitor to actual sales may not be good, but that can be worked out later.

My point of this is when I now do

site:memorylaneprimitives.com

Google Returns

Results 1 - 10 of about 10,800 from memorylaneprimitives.com

We have 1,494 products -the 10,800 is up from yesterdays number of 9,700 - that's an increase of 1,100 in a day. The day before that is was 9,500 (200 difference). So the increase does vary, but it is moving upward and much better than my previous perl store (though we do have more products now too). Oh I forgot - I submit to Froogle and Google Base, so that's another 2,988 (1,494 each)

From my searching google does not have any osCID's, they've indexed everything from pages, to content, to links to the popup images themselves - which may led me to install more information on the popup pages also.

This is with literally not seo optimization, no SEP contribs, no SEO URLs, no to minimal alt tags.

It's all about content. The more content you have the better.

If you have articles about the items you are selling (even if they are very long and detail - all the better) Place them on your site somewhere. The more content that you have that google see and thinks that it is what someone is looking for the better they (or any search engine will index)

When I do get the alt tags working properly the way "I" want them to, I expect even better results.

Oh and avertising. I've gone up and down with google adwords, overature ect. I gave overature a trial run with $30, but didn't get the results I was getting from Adwords. My adwords campaigns have ranged anywhere from $2 a day with .05 clicks to $30.00 a day with .30 clicks. I've currently settled in at $5/day with .10 clicks (The ROI is maximize for me, as the sales ratio was actually lower when I was paying Google more for top placement... it seems that being a few down worked much better )

My opinions concerning your site

- It's slow - I'm on a 8M broadband connection and I needed to wait. That's not good; there are still a lot of people on slow cable, DSL and even dialup. If I was shopping and I have to wait for the page to finish (especially on my connection)... I'd leave. Time is money. You want my money, then save me some time.

- When search engines look at your pages they look for <H1> and <H2> tags. On your index page the only thing I found was

<h3><font color= red>Special Limited Time Offer:</font color></h3>

which says NOTHING about YOU

Even the Welcome to The Iowa Adirondack Company!

<td class="pageHeading">Welcome to The Iowa Adirondack Company!</td>

tells me NOTHING ABOUT YOU

(do not fret, I current have the h1 and h2 tags disabled on my site until I can personally tweak it, so you can still thrive without them though they do help)

- Your index source shows a lot of meta tags that really aren't needed - I'd personally get rid of nearly all of them.

<meta name="rating" content="General" />

Is there an 'X' rated patio furniture site? Is this where all the Loveseats Go?

This tag can go

<meta name="CATEGORY" content="home page" />

Yep, it's the home page alright.. I think the robots got that from the name "index"

This tag can go

<meta name="MS.LOCALE" content="EN-US" />

You know meta names can be made up. Anyone can do it, thus the reason why I beleive a lot of the search engines ignore them. Looks like Microsoft wants to add their MS touch to this. BTW

Microsoft suggests this for THIER TAG You should set this variable when the HTML pages being indexed are on sites in different locales. If all the HTML pages being indexed are in the same locale as the server where Indexing Service is installed, then you do not have to include this property in your HTML files.

This tag can go

<meta name="robots" content="index,follow" />

Um two thing

#1 Robot stuff should stay in your robot.txt file

#2 You are telling them to index the index page and everything below the / - well that everything!

robots.txt in your root directory would contain

User-Agent: *

Allow: /

That's take care of everything on your site and give the robots permission to look for and get everything they can. So this tag can go also

<meta http-equiv="Classification" content="adirondack furniture" />

I won't even go into this one

This one can go too.

<meta name="URL" content="http://www.iowa-adirondack.com" />

Since the search engines are currently at http://www.iowa-adirondack.com I don''t think you need to remind them. That's like you calling me and a few minutes into the conversation I stop to inform you that you are talking on the phone. Just doesn't make sense

This tag can go to

<meta name="revisit-after" content="31 days" />

31 days??? Ditch it. Either set it to 0 or 1 and get them back as much as possible (though you'll want to change things up to keep the robots interested in doing so) or ditch it completely and let the robots decide how often they should revisit. Basically after visiting each page you just Told the search engines "Thank you! See you next month" When (or if you still are) dating, would you go 1 month in between visits with your boyfriend/girlfriend... no.... you don't want them to leave. Same thing with the search engine.. Keep them there if you can and if you can't - make sure they come back as soon as you can get them back

<meta name="VW96.objecttype" content="Adirondack furniture, Adirondack chair, Adirondack chairs, Outdoor furniture, furniture,

discount furniture, table, plus size, big and tall, chaise lounge, patio furniture, discount furniture, furniture store, unfinished furniture, outdoors, recreation, cedar, tete a tete, rocker, loveseat, Iowa" />

I didn't even know what this was. My searching shows me two things though. First - you?re using this incorrectly. And two, while with may be from the Euro Dublin Core; everything I've read (about 10 pages) indicates that no one is really sure what this is. Are you selling overseas too?

I'd get rid of this one too

<meta name="MSSmartTagsPreventParsing" content="true" />

I've seen people on both sides of this fence, though with more and more stating that they are seeing more and more search engines ignoring meta tags and their contents.. I'd ditch this

<meta name="author" content="Iowa Adirondack Company" />

Remove it. I can see the use for this if you are a web site design company and you made this page for someone so you'd state yourself as the author. But since it is your page too, it serves no purpose

<meta name="keywords" content="Adirondack furniture, Adirondack chair, Adirondack chairs, Outdoor furniture, furniture, discount furniture, table, plus size, big and tall, chaise lounge, patio furniture, discount furniture, furniture store, unfinished furniture, outdoors, recreation, cedar, tete a tete, rocker, loveseat, Iowa">

THIS ONE YOU KEEP - BUT some search engines will only read so many keywords. I'm not familiar with Adirondack, but if that is JUST the name of your company and not a brand name type of furniture, I wouldn't repeat it more than once. If people are using your name Adirondack then ok. But unless you're Nike, where you name is an exact match to one of their search terms. State your name once, then choose keywords, repeat important keywords, singular, plural, possibly a common typo or two..

furniture is listed 7 times,

Adirondack - 3 time

outdoor 1 time

outdoors 1 time

outdoors seems out of place, when I use it in a plural sense I think of "The Great Outdoors" which I'm thinking of hunting Caribou, not sitting on furniture. Do people really look for Big and Tall Furniture? Or do they look for furniture first and than narrow down to Big and Tall/Plus sizes?

It's difficult for any to suggest the proper keywords to use. If you know people are getting to you through certain keywords some people would use those to enhance that effect and get more of the same, while others (like myself) would focus on opposing keywords to get the people I'm missing, since the other people are already finding me with no problem. You have to monitor you traffic in regards to your efforts/changes etc..

<meta name="description" content="Adirondack furniture, outdoor furniture, patio furniture, plus sizes, Adirondack chairs, chaise lounges, tables, loveseats and more for quality and comfort outdoors. Free shipping! Refer a friend sale now going on!">

Same thing as above.. It?s just something you need to 'play' with

<meta name="DC.Title" content="Adirondack Chairs & Cedar Patio Furniture Built for the Outdoors for a Lifetime" />

Dublin Core - Ditch it

<meta name="DC.Subject" content="Adirondack furniture, Adirondack chair, Adirondack chairs, Outdoor furniture, furniture, discount furniture, table, plus size, big and tall, chaise lounge, patio furniture, discount furniture, furniture store, unfinished furniture, outdoors, recreation, cedar, tete a tete, rocker, loveseat, Iowa" />

Dublin Core - Ditch it

<meta name="DC.Description" content="Adirondack furniture, outdoor furniture, patio furniture, plus sizes, adirondack chairs, chaise lounges, tables, loveseats and more for quality and comfort outdoors. Free shipping! Refer a friend sale now going on!" />

<meta name="DC.Coverage.PlaceName" content="Global" />

Dublin Core - Ditch it - Wow.. Global... and this whole time I thought Al Gore made the Internet for us folks in Pennsylvania.. Amazing!

Personally IMHO meta tags are a thing of the past. Content is by far the most important - though it must be GOOD content, reader-worthy content, Good site layout and no errors, ALT tags are another very important fact that should not be over-looked and should be used for all images, and all links (including the incoming ones)

Page loads, this could be a lot of reason.. You may need to turn on caching. You may need a better server, more ram or simply more resources. When you delete the extra meta tags, all extra spaces and other un-needed code you free up server load, you reduce load time (it may be minimal but it adds up over time) - think of how slow it will be when you start getting some real traffic.

example: The bottom of your index file has

<!-- Visitors Start -->

<!-- Visitors End -->

WHY? Take it out. If you need to mark the spot for later reference, condense it

<!-- Visitors --> (no start, no stop)

Higher traffic sites such as amazon, ebay and others really crack down on their code, they'll even set 3-character color codes (ie: #fff) in their stylesheets where as most people have #ffffff

Every bit counts

And I?m not even sure what the deal is with this in your code - but you've got a lot of them.

<td align="center" class="smallText" valign="top" width="16.666666666667%">

You are using font's like Impact

<td class="main"><font= "impact">Patio furniture, deck furniture, unfinished and finished cedar ad...

Do you know that if someone do not have the 'impact' font that their system picks the next best thing- which also means your layout can get thrown off as the font changes. Everyone's computer is not set up just like yours is. I personally stick to Verdana, Arial, sans-serif, New Times Roman.

Prices - I'm not an outdoor furniture type of person, I'd sooner lie in the grass (no offense), but the prices to me seem salty - though I have nothing to compare them to. The kids chair would be my price range, though I have 6 ids and that'd still cost me around $420.00 dollars.

With that said, which would be better to do

A) Add more products of the same price range

Sell zero

Make $0.00

B) Add "Additional" products of a lower more easily obtain price range for the masses ($25, $50, $75)

Sell 20

Make a range of $500 to $1500 for those 20 items (gross)

AND possibly in turn up sell or sell a current higher price items with their purchase - because they figured that if they are already buying from you they might as well get the rest from you too.

When you have popular low cost items and people realize that they are low cost, that automatically process (in their brain) that all of your stuff must be low cost. How do you think Wal-Mart become so popular? You just think it's cheaper because the things you buy the most of usually are cheaper - but while you were shopping there, you also decided to pick up this, and that and a little of something else. And even if you do realize that an item is more expensive - there is the thought of needing to drive to that 'other' place (or in net terms, needing to go to another website and pay for shipping again, with the adding shipping from the other site, I migth as well buy it here and the shipping savings will be like getting it for the lower price)

OK.. I could go on and on with suggesting things, but that's just it... everything is a suggestion based on my experience(s)...and I am almost certain that I will have stirred some people up with my thoughts, especially those concerning meta tags, but that's my story and I'm sticking to it.

You call that a post?

I'd call it a thesis. :lol:

Seriously though, there is some good suggestions there.

With Googe, a lot of people seem to worry when their pages don't show up immediately. It just takes time, the same as with any search engine that uses robots to index pages - it will get done eventually.

Submitting your website to directories is worth doing, there is a good guide here. There is another one I've used before but I can't find the url at present.

Definetly get listed in DMOZ - this is used by a lot of other websites for their directory listings including Google.

I didn't realise it took so long to get listed in DMOZ.

I am somewhat fortunate as I knew the editor for the categories I wanted to be listed in, so I was added immediately. I get the impression a lot depends on the category and the editors responsible for it.
