Referral Tracking from customers?

Hi,

I would like to be able to offer my customers a discount if they refer a friend. Is there a way to do this? Do they need to sign up on my website as an affiliate. These would be customers who would only refer one or two people. Does anyone have experience with this that can help? Thanks.
