Guest Posted February 23, 2006 Posted February 23, 2006 I have been in a discussion on a another forum that it may be legal to remove the copyright notice from the catalog side, the statement (not by me) involved this section of the gpl: c) If the modified program normally reads commands interactively when run, you must cause it, when started running for such interactive use in the most ordinary way, to print or display an announcement including an appropriate copyright notice and a notice that there is no warranty (or else, saying that you provide a warranty) and that users may redistribute the program under these conditions, and telling the user how to view a copy of this License. (Exception: if the Program itself is interactive but does not normally print such an announcement, your work based on the Program is not required to print an announcement.) Only the admin side has this notice about warranty, catalog hasn't. Does this make it ok to remove the copyright notice even if the layout of the site theme has not been modified to distinguish itself from the default osCommerce theme?
GraphicsGuy Posted February 23, 2006 Posted February 23, 2006 In my opinion, this statement clarifies it: Exception: if the Program itself ,,,, does not normally print such an announcement, your work based on the Program is not required to print an announcement. If the official distribution of the program normally prints such notices, then derivative works must also print them. If the official distribution doesn't, then a derivative work isn't required to. In the case of osCommerce 2.2ms2 the catalog side prints a public copyright notice but not the warranty information (the latter not being appropriate for someone shopping in the store). The osCommerce copyright policy provides the terms for removal of the public copyright on the catalog side. The osCommerce copyright announcement displayed on the Catalog module of osCommerce can, however, be modified, and even removed, if the layout of the site theme has been modified to distinguish itself from the default osCommerce-copyrighted theme. . Rule #1: Without exception, backup your database and files before making any changes to your files or database. Rule #2: Make sure there are no exceptions to Rule #1.
cannuck1964 Posted February 24, 2006 Posted February 24, 2006 The next release will hve the osCommerce copyright removed totally from displaying on the catalog side, and instead by default display the store name. I would imagine, that this removal of the copyright on the catalog side will soon become ok to do even if no layout changes occur, as the MS3 serries will be doing just this exact thing ;) cheers, Peter M.
