mrfly Posted February 23, 2006 Posted February 23, 2006 hey guys!! im new here and unfortunately i have to ask some real basic questions, ive being researching material relating to what I want to have accomplished on my site but cant even understand half of it, so i guess the best way is just to ask.. I hope someone can help me out.., 1. How do i upload all the contributions found on the support site? i want to be able to do this safely without corrupting everything in case it does not work out. 2. What is the best way about learning how to setup an oscommerce site, I see that there is plenty of material available however i need fundamentals, like what approach i should be taking? what tools i should be using? basically as a complete newbie what is the best way to orient myself if i dont have any background? any help would be appreciated.. thanks
ddp Posted February 23, 2006 Posted February 23, 2006 Tony You can start by reviewing the documentation availabel at: http://www.oscommerce.com/solutions/documentation In particular the Knowledgebase has lots of information As for you question about contributions each one is different and has a different method for instalation. Download one and have a look at the instructions. Before you start to do any contribution you should back up your database via admin=>tools=>database backup and then back up your whole site via ftp. Backup before making changes. Backup before making changes! Backup before making changes!! You did do a backup? eh?
mrfly Posted February 23, 2006 Author Posted February 23, 2006 Thanks for your advice Michael..., i will read up on all this, is there a book available on all this, i mean the real basics, a step to step approach on what I should be doing to get in order to have an ecommerce site operational? alot of the information provided I feel is for people who have a basic understanding of programming, and unforunately I dont. thnks again TJ

Lot's of newbie questions that explain the basics. There are lots of sites that have information on how to use html, php, mysql, etc. I am sure some time spent googleing various topics can educate you on these topics. Backup before making changes. jasonabc Posted March 3, 2006 Posted March 3, 2006 1. Depends if you've done any alterations to your default install of OSC? Most mods/contributions are designed to work with the default install so usually you can just copy the amended mod files straight over the top of the default ones. If you have already started changing stuff then you'll need a file compare program like ExamDiff to find out which lines of code you need to change. Almost every contribution I have installed has required a SQL query to be run on the database so you'll need to know how to either SSH in to the db (or use whatever MySQL tool your ISP gives you like PhpMyAdmin) and run SQL queries from there. cheers Jason Jason My Contributions: Paypal Payflow PRO | Rollover Category Images | Authorize.net Invoice Number Fix
