Lost Orders and shopping basket retrieval

I have noticed that frequently orders are lost. I use Internetsecure as the primary payment option for my site. I have set up for an email entitled possible order to be created when a customer goes to the InternetSecure site. This is not the ideal method of tracking an order but it helps on occasion. Sometimes an email is not generated and many times the customer fails to return to the site as directed. These means that the contents of the their order is lost. Where are these orders and how can I retrieve them? Why can't I see the contents of all active shopping carts either in the database or stored in some other fashion?

What is the best practice for avoiding lost orders? It really is very embarrassing to send emails to clients asking what did you order.

yea if they don't return and no auto-return exists for a gateway you may have this problem. But see the contributions for a possible alternative:

This morning I took a look at this. I tried to go through the step by step install process but I am stuck on step 1 importing the rcs_install database. I use MYsql Front which is a little different.

yes some hosts don't provide phpmyadmin. You could install it in your store separately and simplify things.

Or you could setup a server with your site on your local pc and then work there. Once everything is done you use the backup manager of osc and load the database. You need to have full backups of course on every step.

I have tried my best to install the step by step guide for Recover Cart Sales. I think the step by step instructions should be rewritten. perhaps I will have a go at this when I have gotten this to work. I think I have every thing setup but there are a few things that i need to figure out. First does MS1 refer to the verion of SQL I am running on the server?

I have noticed that now records are showing up in the database in scart. What could be causing this problem. Also in the step buy step instructions there is mention of "run the tool" in the FAQ what does this mean. In any case I received no error messages but I don't see any carts yet.

the directory structure need to be explained a little better. How do I run the tool? What doesn MS1 and MS2 refer to and how do I check my verion.
