admin "new product" button

i want to disable the ability for people using the web-based admin tool to add items inside categories.

 

 

here's what i mean:

Parent Category

-- Subcategory

- Items

 

 

 

 

with my current setup (due to the SEO url contribution i use), if somebody adds an item in the "subcategory", it hides all other products

 

how can i disable the "new product" button if a subcategory exists?

all of my products are inserted INTO categories, there are not products in this instance:

Parent Category

-- Subcategory - Items

- Items

 

 

 

to sum it up:

Click "Categories/Products"

Select a category (click twice to get into the subcategory and get past the "edit/delete/move" phase)

--this is where i want to hide the "new product" button

 

 

 

i want it to be like this:

Click "Categories/Products"

Select a category (click twice to get into the subcategory and get past the "edit/delete/move" phase)

Select subcategory (click twice to get into the subcategory and get past the "edit/delete/move" phase)
