Optimising OsCommerce Sites

Recommended Posts

Hi,

As a SEO specialist I am helping a friend to optimise his new OsCommerce store. I have researched how to do this and from what I have read the following guidelines need to be considered. I may be wrong so please let me know if this is the case.

Being new to OsCommerce and not being a coder hinders my ability to install these contributions... is there any simple guide on how to do this or do you think in reality I'm best paying someone to do this for me?

SEO Guidelines;

> Add product overview and descriptions to each page

> Add H1 tag headings

> Assign unique title/description tags using cDynamic Meta Tags v1.0

> SE friendly URL's - Install Ultimate SEO URLs 2.1d

> Implement SID killer v1.2b and integrate with Ultimate SEO URLs

> Create & install ROR Sitemap at root level

> Build relevant incoming links to boost link popularity

Thanks in anticipation.

There is a lot more involved than that to fully optimize an oscommerce shop. If you use Header Tags instead of cDynamic Meta Tags, you will solve the first three, as well as other, problems in one shot. You don't need to install the sid killer contribution, although I guess it won't hurt. You do need to ensure that Prevent Spider sessions is set to true in admin->sessions. You should update the spiders file (there's a contribution) and install a robots file. Adding the dynamic sitemap and All Products with Images contributions will also help. And I assume you are aware that none of the above will do you much good if you don't pick the keywords properly.
